Max Heart Rate Looks to be Incorrect

I have the 1040 and I had the Fenix 6x Pro Solar Edition until a few days ago.  The devices, the app, and the web would report different max HR.  So I sold the Fenix to ensure the Fenix was not causing the problem.

I worked out and a new Max HR and Lactate Threshold were detected to be 170 and 158 respectively.

My workout zones are set to be % of Lactate Threshold.

I did an indoor ride this evening and  Do these heart rate zones look correct?  If my max HR  is 170, how is Zone 3 set to 163bpm - 171bpm if my max HR is 170?

I can't seem to get Garmin devices to cooperate.

  • You choose LTHR as calculation method - this is based on Lactade Threshold. Just user other method ;)

  • I would rather use %LTHR since Garmin recommends using it instead of % Max HR.  I did another workout and the device detects yet another max hr and a new lactate threshold. So now both increased by 2, 172 for max hr and 162 for lactate threshold..

The zones are totally off so I hit the reset button.  Maybe the Fenix 6 messed up the zones and the Edge could never recover.  The reset zones actually look better.  However, I am in zone 3 almost as soon as I start pedaling my bike on workouts.  Maybe the device will eventually catch up to my real fitness level???

  • Hi, each device has its own algorithm for performance metrics, therefore different devices may disagree and it's OK. Namely for this reason Garmin makes you choose which device to define as Primary Wearable (by default it's watch), and which - as Primary Training device - this one shall be Edge (if you train cycling, and if you want your main metrics from it). So it's simple. No need to sell watch))

Garmin Connect app will always sync your training metrics from your Primary Training device to your watch, like Max HR or LTHR.

And if you're also runni g in addition to cycling, you can turn in running-specific HR metrics in GC app, in your watch settings, then watch will keep running metrics isolated from cycling metrics.

From my experience, Edge sometimes may have glitches with HR zones, so it hepls to monitor from time to time if those are correct, and hit "reset zones" jyst if you want them to be re-calcilated fresh, e.g. after you reset Max HR.

Same with power zones - they can be way off, so resetting does help, otherwise training statistics will be inaccurate.

  • Very good explanation!!

The reset zones on the Edge makes things look better. It keeps detecting a new max heart rate every 1-2 workouts so I do see that the zones could get out of wack after a while.  (Un)fortunately, the eBay auction for the watch ended last night and it sold.  I miss body battery and sleep a little bit, but probably not enough to purchase another wearable. Thanks for that solid reply!!
