Gps will not connect to unit and show speed and distance or loaction

So I started riding and it wouldn't show speed or movement.  I rested it 3 times and still nothing.  My wife's live track showed like africa or something.  I just joined the beta program and download the latest software 26.07 into the unit but that doesn't seem to work.  Anyone have some ideas?

  • Sorry if this seems too obvious, but have you checked whether GPS is enabled on the activity profile you're using?

  • Sadly yes I checked that.

  • Okay...and is the GPS status indicator icon showing a good signal when you start your rides? (Also, you mention your wife's Livetrack; are we talking about two different devices here, or it it just her unit the has the problem?)

  • Same device. The gps only shows one bar no matter which satellite system I select.  I’ve been using garmins for over 20 years and have never had any issues. When I open the link sent to my wife phone for live tracking it opens a map of Africa.  Also my connect has the Chinese writing like others have posted; not sure if it’s related.

  • Yes, I've heard about the "Chinese" thing, but haven't heard anyone affected mention a GPS issue (and I think they would: of the two, it's clearly the most significant).
It's an odd issue. Like you, I've used Garmins for a long time, and the 1040 is FAR better at gaining a strong GPS signal than any other I've used - it gets full strength before I even go outside, and my cottage is surrounded my much larger buildings (which normally make GPS slow). So, your problem isn't in any way "normal". I did see someone with a similar issue on here a while back, but I can't remember how it was resolved.
It may well be one for Support, but if it's a new unit it might be worth trying a factory reset first.

  • How do you do a factory reset? I did both reset you can select on the unit and delete unit from phone and that didn’t help.

  • Thanks for the help. It doesn’t list the gps as 0.0 but version 13.

  • You may (or may not...) have already done it, then - System > Device Reset > Delete Data and Reset Settings > .accept.
In any case, I think that link I posted has a more likely solution.
