Battery chraging only to 59%

I'm having some issues with a relatively new (a couple of months old) Edge 1040, the battery doesn't seem to be charging fully, or charging very very slowly.

At first I thought that the device was overheating, and that the internal circuitry is preventing the damage to the device. However that does not seem to be the case, since the device shows the temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, which is some 4-5 degrees off of the actual value, but shouldn't be nearly enough for the device not to charge.

When looking at the power draw, it seems that the device is using just 5V at 0.05-0.2A, depending whether the device is on or in sleep mode.

This does not look like normal charging behavior to me. I've tried several chargers, all of which work perfectly fine with other devices. I know some devices are quite picky regarding the charges, but I don't think this is one of them.

Any advice is more than welcome at this stage. Thanks!

  • After having the device on a charger for additional 20-30 minutes, and then unplugging it, the status miraculously states that the charge reached 100%. That's very odd, considering that the device's current draw was not even 0.1A since the device was in sleep mode. Could it be that the battery is already dead?

  • Don't worry, your battery isn't dead - you can test how long it holds e.g. with gps turned on and sleep turned off.

A possible reason for such behaviour of battery % indicator is that it's lagging behind (doesn't update properly), so it's actually charging even if % doesn't increase, then it eventually updates and - yepps - shows 100% i.e the actual charge.

I do experien e such lagging of my 1040 and 540 too, from time to time.

And yes, Edge devices are somewhat "charger-sensitive" as you call it, as I have some chargers that have possibly degraded over 2-3 years of constant use, and those cause Edges charging extremely slowly, so I don't use them anymore.

    Hope it helps.

ring / contact garmin support, if they can't fix it they should send you a new one, sounds like a dud battery
