Garmin-Edge-1040 does not work with OpenMTP on Mac M4 and Sequoia

The latest firmware 25.24 surely broke the ability to be a Native disk on a MAC

OpenMTP is a possible work around.  Works without issue on MAC (Intel silicon) and Big Sur

But not on the latest MAC

Mac-Mini M4

Apple Silicon

Sequoia 15.1.1

Using the latest release openmtp-3.2.25-mac-arm64

This software release is specially for the Apple Silicon MACs

  • I have a MacBook M1 with Sequoia and I had an issue with this - I'm not sure if this is the same error you are getting.

As I installed the Android File Transfer on my Mac, after opening it it showed a message like "No Android device found - Connect your device with an USB cable to start".

    • The Garmin was surely connected to my USB-C port.

I power cycle the laptop and made another attempt but got same message.

The issue in my case was: Either Garmin Express and Android File Transfer were setup as "Startup programs". It means that both are started during MacOS startup, but in order to correctly read the device, they cannot be started at same time otherwise a conflict will cause none to work correctly.

So I took off Garmin Express from automatically loading during MacBook startup:

    1. Go to the Apple menu and select System Settings
    2. Click General in the sidebar
    3. Click Login Items & Extensions
    4. Click on "Garmin Express"
    5. and press "-" (minus button) at the bottom of the dialog box.

After a reboot I could use "Android File Transfer" program.

    • I see you use "OpenMTP" but possibly the root-cause could be the same.
  • Yes Thank You for your Reply Mee-Yuki

I followed your instructions and OpenMTP cam right up showing the Garmin Edge-1040

I was surprised to see that Garmin Express was set to Open on Start-up, but no longer

and I think this makes OpenMTP to work with MAC Silicon and Sequoia 15.1.1

  • I have this issue with the latest firmware, but on an Intel Macbook running latest Sequoia. However, Garmin Express sees it. I don't have Garmin Express automatically starting at startup.

UPDATE: I installed OpenMTP and I see the Garmin folder.
