I have been using my Garmin Edge 1040 for almost two years. At the beginning, it kept restarting during my rides which was very annoying. But that was later fixed by a software update. Although it happened again a few weeks ago, at least it doesn't seem to happen regularly again.
What bothers me more is that it constantly keeps restarting whenever I charge it with a USB cable connected to my desktop computer. I'm not 100% sure but I think it has always been doing this. Since it has always charged anyway, I have ignored this bug for quite some time. But today I wanted to update the outdated maps on this device so I installed Garmin Express on my MacBook (since Linux on my desktop computer is not supported) and tried to connect the device. But the Edge kept restarting and the Express app wasn't able to even detect it because of that.
I must say I'm deeply disappointed with this device. It was supposed to be the high-end cycling navigation from Garmin but instead it is probably the most expensive brick I have ever bought. It cost as much as my iPhone while having much less powerful hardware. This means we're paying Garmin premium for the "user experience" and all the "features" but even the most basic things don't work after two years on the market. If I had to decide again, I would have never bought this device and I'm also telling this to all my fellow cyclists.
