Restarting when connected to computer

I have been using my Garmin Edge 1040 for almost two years. At the beginning, it kept restarting during my rides which was very annoying. But that was later fixed by a software update. Although it happened again a few weeks ago, at least it doesn't seem to happen regularly again.

What bothers me more is that it constantly keeps restarting whenever I charge it with a USB cable connected to my desktop computer. I'm not 100% sure but I think it has always been doing this. Since it has always charged anyway, I have ignored this bug for quite some time. But today I wanted to update the outdated maps on this device so I installed Garmin Express on my MacBook (since Linux on my desktop computer is not supported) and tried to connect the device. But the Edge kept restarting and the Express app wasn't able to even detect it because of that.

I must say I'm deeply disappointed with this device. It was supposed to be the high-end cycling navigation from Garmin but instead it is probably the most expensive brick I have ever bought. It cost as much as my iPhone while having much less powerful hardware. This means we're paying Garmin premium for the "user experience" and all the "features" but even the most basic things don't work after two years on the market. If I had to decide again, I would have never bought this device and I'm also telling this to all my fellow cyclists.

  • Might not be the same issue, but it could be the cable. I've noticed the 1040 will not correctly charge with some cables (and connect/disconnect charging constantly), but will charge OK with others - cables are not all built the same. Might be worth trying with different USB ports as well, as some are USB 2.0, others 3.0, or with different charging capacities.

  • I experience a similar issue with my 1040 unit after Win10 PC connection. It somehow freezes afterwards and even requires a forceful shutdown. Additionally, it restarted twice during today's ride and - to add to the annoyance - switches to the (default) Indoor profile (without GPS). I can live with the restarts as I am quite happy with Garmin devices and their apps, but it is annoying to fumble around to get the proper profile during a ride. Just stumbled upon your post to find a workaround by selecting a primary profile. (Device SW 20.19 / Express 7.21.0.0 as of 20-May-2024).

  • Interesting idea but it behaves the same way with all the cables I have tried, even the official one from Garmin.

  • I have discovered that this problem occurs when you have "Ask for New Accessories" option selected in MacOS Settings (Privacy & Security > Allow accessories to connect). It looks like Edge 1040 is not able to handle this state when MacBook doesn't allow it to connect. There is always a quick prompt shown on MacOS but it disappears in less than a second as the Edge restarts. When I switch that option to "Automatically When Unlocked", the Edge is recognized by the Garmin Express app. But it would still be nice if Garmin fixed this so the device would wait until it gets approved by a user on a MacBook. Because the option requiring user approval is the default one on MacOS.
