Stuck on loading screen after connection with PC

Hello,

Whenever I connect my Edge 1040 to a computer (iMac, laptop) and safely disconnect the device, the Edge restarts but becomes stuck on the "Loading courses, workouts, and locations" stage. To resolve this, I am always compelled to hold down the power button for 10 seconds to force a reboot of the device.

Some time ago, I had my unit replaced due to a broken screen, but the replacement unit is experiencing the same issue.

I have ensured that the latest firmware (20.19, previously 19.22) and the most recent version of Garmin Express (Mac) are installed.

Do you have any suggestions to resolve this issue?

The same problem on Linux. Both 19.22 and 20.19 versions are affected. I don't use garmin express. I just connect 1040 as a mass storage device.

The reason for this are special characters in course names like for example /, ä, ö
Just rename the courses on your device and you're fine.
But yes, it's very annoying.

I have tried to delete all courses. It doesn't help.

No special characters in the course names, unless a hyphen is considered as one?

But it looks like antage removed all his courses and the issue is still present.

A hyphen should be considered as a special character.
I had the same problem two days ago and after I renamed one of the courses everything was fine.

This problem also affects the 840 series. Currently, there is no viable method to solve this problem. It appears to be a bug in the firmware.

That does seem to work (partially).

Removed all my courses. Connected edge1040 to an iMac; ejected the drive and the device got stuck again.

I uploaded a few courses like kidsVoetbalEke40km to the edge1040, connected again to the iMac, ejected and now the device starts correctly ...

Uploaded a few more (10), connected/ejected ... looks OK again.

Any idea if an underscore is allowed?

I've tried this fix and renamed all my courses to ensure there is nothing but letters, numbers and spaces in my course names. Still having this problem. Is a space an issue as well?

The solution for the 840 seems to be to power down the unit completely before connecting. I've tried that with the 1040 and it didn't work.
