Connection to basecamp/mapinstall broken in 19.x

With the 19.x Firmware I experience the following problems:

- maps on the edge aren‘t available in basecamp anymore

- maps can‘t be transferred anymore from basecamp to the 1040

Please fix it asap

  • Took out some lines rather to the back. I will check tomorrow. Maybe there is a 32,000 character limit for that file for Basecamp?

  • Same here.

One additional problem: My map from openfietsmaps.nl doesn't display anymore. It is still on the device, and also is activated, but it doesn't display anything. Before the update to 19.x everything was ok.

I also had a look at GarminDevice.xml. On my device, the whole xml didn't have any formatting/linebreaks. So I thought, maybe the Garmin Apps are using a fixed line buffer of 32k. I reformatted the xml with the help of Visual Studio (that can do this automatically). This did not help.

BTW. When not beeing able to send Tracks to the Device from Basecamp (which normally places the track in Garmin\NewFiles) I saw that Basecamps shows the storage of the Device as "Garmin D:". When selecting that, Basecamp will place tracl.gpx in Garmin\GPX. However the Device seems not to do anything with that and the track cannot be loaded.

It was no problem to copy the files manually to Garmin\NewFiles and that worked as expected.

  • Thank you very much   your tip helped me

  • I've removed some lines - and it works again. Maybe it's too long?

    I uploaded a working version here: https://openmtbmap.org/GarminDevice.xml

Right click - Saves as and choose the Garmin folder of the Edge 1040.

Hopefully Garmin fixes the firmware to create files again that are readable by Basecamp. My version works - but needs to be replaced before every time you use Basecamp or MapInstall.

The stupid thing is that the "workaround" from

unfortunately it is not a permanent solution because 1040 always creates a new, incorrect file when used (and the marmot greets you every day)

  • I removed it - but I don't think that this makes a change. I downgraded to 18.25 as my unit is affected from the battery bug as well using 19.19.

  • oh yeah - after downgrade it had auto sleep activated - but kept on recording through the night - and it was kinda unusable with huge delay (10 seconds before registering a click) on the 24 hours in my house activity that was keeping on running. Not sure if that was a problem beforee too - never had an activity over 12 hours - but with that 26 hour activity it was so slow - speed or other things in dashboard would only update every 5 seconds...

  • I contacted German support and received the following answer:

"The current Edge models are basically no longer intended for use with BaseCamp ... and ... we can't say why the problem with your Edge 1040 only now occurs as a result of this update, we have reported the case internally, but can't promise whether there will be a change/adjustment in a future update"

    Hope dies last

  • I removed it

Thanks for that  I don't actually want to downgrade, but rather want Garmin to do its homework

  • Ok, that‘s probably no help for you… But as info:
I updated my Edge 1040 to 19.19 and my Garmindevice.xml is about 36 k now.

I‘m still on Basecamp 4.6.2.  I denied update since then, because it was reported (that‘s years ago) that the update broke mapinstall.

Now I benefit, because Basecamp and reading maps from Edge are still working.
    (Edge is F:)

  • That's very interesting. It's also possible to use old MapInstall with newer Basecamp or vice versa. So I guess both MapInstall and Basecamp need to be on the old version.

And that's easier than each time changing th GarminDevice.xml.

It's not 32.000 characters limit - because it's already 34500 on 18.25... when I installed a few apps - as they all get appended to the xml.

However - here are the added lines on 19.19 - it's all about IQ. It's easiest to open the xml in a browser splitscreen with a second browser as they correctly split it from one line into a readable format:

Edit: Removed the long part of changes - because it*s actually just one part that is in the wrong order - see message below.
