Daily Suggested Workout: Mismatch between Garmin Edge and Garmin Watch (Epix / Fenix)

Hello,

We have been loyal customers of Garmin products for over 10 years and have enjoyed their seamless connectivity. However, today we’re facing trouble with a new Edge 1040: It doesn’t show the training calendar that is present in Garmin Connect and our Garmin watches (Epix and Fenix). For your convenience, we’re attaching pictures showing a mismatch in the calendar on Connect, the watch, and the Edge.

As a result of this problem, the Daily Suggested Workout on the watch differs from the Daily Suggested Workout on the Edge.

We have spent nearly an hour on the phone with both the cycling and the watch support teams, but are yet to have a solution. We also see this is a common question in the Garmin user forums (below).

We hope that you can advise us how to resolve this issue. Otherwise, we’ll sadly have to return the Edge device as defective.

Thank you!

  • I don't see any screenshots attached. Can you please provide more details?

    - Are you using a training plan or daily suggested workouts? To my understanding there are no daily suggested workouts in Garmin Connect. If you build a plan in Garmin Connect, or use a 3rd-party service which exports to your Garmin Connect calendar, then it will override daily suggested workouts on your watch and/or Edge. Daily suggested workouts are kind of a fallback if you don't have a training plan.

    - This might be trivial, but are you using the same Garmin Connect account on all devices? Are your VO2 max and training load estimates in sync? Make sure that you sync all your devices other than the primary training device (as per your Garmin Connect configuration) first, then sync your primary training device, then again sync all other devices. Only this can guarantee that all devices have the same information and only then you can expect some similarity between suggested workouts (after those get updated, to my understanding overnight).

    - From my experience you can get the daily workout suggestions to be similar, but not always identical. For example my Forerunner 965 typically suggests longer intervals with few or no breaks, while my Edge prefers more shorter intervals or interval sets with short rests. In the end those seem comparable, so I choose the one I like more. The base/threshold/vo2max/sprint choice and frequency looks similar overall and target levels (even though unrelated to my manual FTP setting) and their accumulated duration also looks similar.

If your question is really about daily suggested workouts, I would not split hair over those. They are some kind of suggestion to maintain fitness, but to my experience they are not periodized and not challenging enough. I was following those for fun for this summer months and my VO2 max estimate basically stalled, with Garmin itself suggesting my training left the productive and entered maintenance phase. I since switched to a regular training plan and guess what - my training is again productive and my VO2 max estimate skyrocketed (I don't fully believe the magnitude anyway, but my FTP does increase).

In short: I really recommend getting a proper training plan. It's best to work with a coach, but I found Tacx plans to be surprisingly good for me. It's a bit tricky to get those on your Edge (well, it's a Garmin company ;-) for outdoor rides, but I managed to manually copy the ones that I wanted. If you want more adaptation, I am reasonably happy with TrainerRoad, and their outdoor ride export to Edge - maybe except the monthly price ;-)

  • Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful response, !

The daily suggested workouts are an important Garmin feature, see here

In this specific case, they are tied to a race calendar. On the watch, they offer specific recommendations, customized for the race. On the Edge, we receive generic suggestions.

A major attraction of the Garmin system is that the devices operate in concert. If you have a suggestion on how to achieve it, we're all ear.

  • Does you Edge 1040 recognise the race you put in the calendar? Does the primary event glance show it? See www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-BB3A08AB-E2EA-4EE5-A067-ABC812F542F5.html

  • I managed to do so for one event, and only by selecting the event and then clicking, "Send to Device". However, my impression is that the calendar resides in Connect, and should sync automatically to all devices.

    Again, thanks for your help
