Altitude Acclimation ?

Not a deal breaking issue but an annoyance, since a recent update (18.x ?) the Altitude Acclimation notice is displayed after EVERY ride, real and Indoor.

The 1040 Owner's Manual page says "Your Edge® 1040 device provides acclimation notifications ... when the altitude is above 800 m (2625 ft.)." but I have not been above a real or virtual altitude of 300m for 12 months and I get the notice even after an Indoor ride! I live on a fairly flat continent where the highest mountain is 2,228m and that is 1000km from where I live so not a lot of acclimation to be had.

The notice gets annoying as it appears and has to be dismissed every ride, I have most "performance" stuff turned off but can't find a switch to turn this off too?

Why does it display if I have not been over the 800m and especially for indoor rides?

  • I can't see it mentioned in this thread, but have you tried calibrating the altimeter? it can get mis-calibrated if there is very low or high atmospheric pressure on an update.

  • Thanks, No problems at all with the altimeter / elevation numbers, I have it set to calibrate at the start of rides which are mostly from set locations which have an elevation recorded. While the 1040 Garmin help says acclimation is calculated “when the altitude is above 800 m” with mine it occurs with EVERY ride even if never above sea level and even if an indoor ride never leaving my garage.

ps, the acclimation notice only started from 18.xx (in the betas as reported in beta forums, and then 18.xx production through to current 19.xx versions), has to be a bug, not huge, just annoying to add to the other annoying features

  • always the sleep mode is the problem.... the x30 series have time offset issue if the unit is always turned off to sleep mode only (and on Strava flyby you have always time offset comparing to others in the group ride with not x30 units) . (the FTP calculation is wrong if the unit goes to sleep, that is still a bug in every newer Edge). the time is wrong on the top right corner if the unit turned on from sleep mode (ok, it is only display bug) until any touch . i dont know who coding it , dont they ride regulary with bike? :)

  • Still the same! Are Garmin going to fix this or do we just have to  get used to these unnessecary messages?

  • On the Edge, if you go to Navigation > Select the 3 dots in the upper right > What do you see for your " set elevation"?

  • What do you see for your " set elevation"?

My 1040 currently says 62m, but I am sitting in my living room on the 12th floor above street level, if I do it on the street where most of my local rides start it says 20m which is what the topographical map says, I just got back from an outdoor ride where I never got above 85m but when I saved the ride it told me my Altitude Acclimation had declined.

  • And then a few hours later, I did some adjustments to the bike and did 2 almost identical indoor rides on my Tacx Flux to test (5kms/72m) , never leaving the garage under my apartment building and each time it displayed the Altitude Acclimation screen as per my first post on this (above). The silliness compounded as I had cleaned up a mass of unwanted rides in Garmin Connect so I also got 2 "New Ascent PR" records. So as I said above, not a big deal but it is just silly, unnecessary and a small annoyance as you have to acknowledge the screen before getting the end of ride stats., makes Garmin look a bit silly and the numbers are meaningless.

  • It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that this was fixed in 21.16, even though not mentioned in the change log, thank you

  • I saw that too and I must admit that I was surprised. So that was an improvment, no the trouble for me is that somesting happened with my map over Europe, west-Europe seems to have dissapeared and it´s not possible to get it back! I also got some problem with that my Edge somesthimes is difficult to stort, It starts, shuts down, starts, shuts down many, many  times before it works.

Well, the unit is quite old now, so I would expect it to work better. I have contacted Garmin about all the newproblems that came with 21.16, but the altitudeproblem was in fact solved!
