Differences in intensity minutes between Edge 1040 and Garmin Connect

Every week I have differences in intensive minutes displayed on the Edge 1040 and in Garmin Connect. Edge always shows higher values. Of course, all activities are synced, the heart rate recorded by the Edge appears on the Garmin Connect Daily Summary screen.

I was looking for an answer on the forum and I know that there used to be a problem with intensive minutes, but they did not synchronize at all and the heart rate was not displayed on the timeline in the Daily Summary (e.g. here). That problem seems to have been resolved.
Why do the Edge 1040 and Garmin Connect count intensive minutes differently despite correct heart rate synchronization?

  • This week, the intensive minutes from my Thursday activity did not record to my account at all, but on the Edge 1040 they are visible. This time, no heart rate data uploaded to the timeline in the day summary view at all. So basically this time the same old error occurred. Last week I had no heart rate gaps in the daily summary and yet the value of intensive minutes was different, and this week, apparently, there was an even worse bug.

  • In my case, intensivity minutes from edge 1040 are never uploaded to Garmin Connect nor to the watch. Sync works the other way with no problems.

So in my watch and on GC I see only intensivity minutes from watch activities and on edge I see everything - the IM from the watch plus from activities recorded on the edge.

It is ridiculous - the more Garmin devices I have, the worse user experience and lower trust in the metrics shown is.

  • I would say that it is pathetic, this equipment costs a bit and the brand is also rather reputable, and such imperfections. For example, the wife has sensors for which the battery status is reported for year 2038, unless the Edge 1000 once sent such incorrect data. Because of this, the battery status display does not work, because although the sensor reports a discharged battery, the system claims that the battery is ok, because it has a newer report (from 2038) that the battery is fully charged... I wrote to the support but they did not help at all, they only told me to reset everything, disconnect - and it does nothing. She still see a 2038 battery report for sensor in her account even though that sensor has been gone for over a year.

Back on topic, maybe try setting Edge as your preferred activity tracker.

  • This would be against their FAQ on that topic - you should set wearable as primary training device, not the edge.

And if that flips the situation, I won’t see IM from watch on GC - and that’s a no go as well.

Plus I’m not on Garmin’s payroll, to do software testing for them. I’ve paid premium for me to focus on trainings…

  • Thanks for paying attention, I thought that the device on which we record activities most often should be set as PTD. After reading this article, it turned out that I was wrong. This setting determines which device will calculate my stats, i.e. it should be turned on all the time - then setting Edge as PTD is a mistake. The only exception is probably the situation in which we do not record any activity on the watch.
I hope that when I change the PTD to Fenix 7, it will not make the situation worse.

  • Update: changing PTD to edge didn’t help.

So IM still stays on edge only. In GC it gets discarded- both in overall sum and in the activity details.

Looks like my dumb watch recognised via move IQ or HR sensor small part of the training and assigned 21 IM points. And that value has overridden 200 IM from edge

Other metrics, like load, training status or even active calories seems to be fine. So it’s “just” IM.

  • Do you wear a watch while using Edge? Maybe try turning off the heart rate measurement in the watch in this case during the activity.
For about a week everything has been syncing fine, but I leave my watch at home, and after every workout after syncing, I turn off the Edge, sync the watch, and turn the Edge back on and sync - I guess that helps.

  • Yes, I wear the watch all the time.

I did following changes during todays indoor workout and finally have IM in sync Tada

    - hard reset of the edge 1040 and setup from scratch

    - took off my watch. Not switching off, not turning off anything - just taking it off the wrist during the workout and putting it on directly after.

    - I’ve used garmins HRM Pro Plus instead of an old decathlons HRM

Not sure which of those changes helped, but all the metrics are in sync between the forerunner, GC and the edge - without any secret voodoo shenanigans :-)

Happy Days* - thanks for suggesting taking off the watch.
