Fed up with Garmin device limits

The Garmin 1040 has 32GB RAM and several GB's free. Nonetheless, Garmin thinks it is wise to set hard limits.

There is a hard maximum of 100 routes and 200 activities. This leads to problems. I can't sync new routes unless I delete some other routes. But the number of routes in use is nowhere to be seen, neither is there a message when you try to sync a route when there are already 100 routes on the device. The sync just fails without explanation.

Same for the activities. Today my last activity could not be stored because I suspect I hit the limit of 200, so the ride was lost.

So, to overcome these limits, I must regularly manually remove old files from the device to keep the device functioning. Seen how modern the Garmin 1040 is, manual interaction is unacceptable.

I would like Garmin to fix a few things:

- Add an option in the menu to see how many routes and activities are on the device

- At 90% of the limit, please warn the user

- Make it easier to archive routes and activities to another device.

- And the most important: Set the limits much higher. We have GB's of free space. Routes and activities are only a few KB in size. Limits could easily be set to 1000 or more.

  • It's in the spec page for the 1040 (and and the older units). Which was already mentioned.

  • “Redundant” activities from the Edge unit are deleted automatically, starting with the oldest. Without user participation or interaction.

New activity is not “lost” when there are already “200 activities saved” on the unit. Simply the oldest activity is deleted first and then the “current activity” is saved.

  • not necessarily the behavior i have seen in the past.

what i had seen were two different behaviors (and granted i did not retest recently, maybe they did change):

    1. after 100 activities in history it would keep recording more without drleting any. i think even beyond 200.

    2. when a sw update was accepted, it would keep only 100 (or 200) activities, dropping any beyond that (dumb small) number, DROPPING THE NEWEST!.

Made me learn to NEVER accept updates, but first make a full backup of the 1040 (except maps, too big) including keeping all gcupdates.

Also their testing serms to be on near virgin installs, and many bugs were "fixed" by getting rid of years of courses, map overlays, etc etc.

    Poor software.

  • The limits are annoying but the lack of visibility to the limits is infuriating. Routes just don’t sync, new activities just don’t save, segments don’t show up, etc. As a developer, this is just inexcusable and lazy.

Also, here’s a crazy idea….maybe consider a way to organize your routes on the device. If only there was some paradigm people are familiar with that could solve this problem.

I have gravel routes, road routes, routes that start from home and other locations. The Karoo lets you put these in folders to make them much easier to handle.

Honestly. The more I use the 1040 the more I’m convinced the developers don’t cycle at all. They don’t use the device day to day, otherwise they’d fix a million little things the first week they used it.
