Fed up with Garmin device limits

The Garmin 1040 has 32GB RAM and several GB's free. Nonetheless, Garmin thinks it is wise to set hard limits.

There is a hard maximum of 100 routes and 200 activities. This leads to problems. I can't sync new routes unless I delete some other routes. But the number of routes in use is nowhere to be seen, neither is there a message when you try to sync a route when there are already 100 routes on the device. The sync just fails without explanation.

Same for the activities. Today my last activity could not be stored because I suspect I hit the limit of 200, so the ride was lost.

So, to overcome these limits, I must regularly manually remove old files from the device to keep the device functioning. Seen how modern the Garmin 1040 is, manual interaction is unacceptable.

I would like Garmin to fix a few things:

- Add an option in the menu to see how many routes and activities are on the device

- At 90% of the limit, please warn the user

- Make it easier to archive routes and activities to another device.

- And the most important: Set the limits much higher. We have GB's of free space. Routes and activities are only a few KB in size. Limits could easily be set to 1000 or more.

  • Great. That would be what I expect. I haven’t run into that one personally yet that I’ve seen.

That definitely does not happen with courses. It took me a few rides and some searching to realize I was at the limit. Just quiet failure with no mention of any limit.

  • I believe the oldest one is deleted to make room for the current ride.

Is this documented someplace? I'm familiar with the 100 courses, but the 200 would really surprise me. I'm going to test this out

  • Well how about that. I put 500 files into the activities folder and then disconnected from the computer. It took FOREVER to boot and trimmed the activities folder to 200 files.

  • The 200 is indicated as “hours” on the page for the devices. The units aren’t “Hours”.

Nice you took the time to test it. (Now, you know why there’s a limit!)

  • I dont think there is need to have more than 100 routes and 200 activities. I have never looked at the past activities on the device, if I want to check past rides I use GC or Strava, so they can be even less on the device. Courses: I have couple of routes on the device and I hardly understand how to manage 100 routes on the device (whats the point of having so much routes?), the only way how to find something is to scroll endlesly because search doesnt look user friendly; even when I go cycling abroad I add some 5-7 courses which I delete afterwards.

  • My complaint was that I shouldn’t have to manage the activities manually and it sounds like that one works ok.

My courses are synced from Strava or downloaded from RideWithGPS. I do delete them occasionally. My main gripe is there was not indication of WHY I couldn’t sync another. No warning message, nothing.

In general the route management could use work. I’d rather manage it in the cloud and have it reflected in device. Deleting courses online doesn’t deleted them on device or vice versa. I just want them to by synced.

  • The limits are annoying, but the lack of warnings is worse. Completely agree there should be a notification of approaching limits rather than just a silent fail when syncing routes. Can’t be a hard fix to code.

  • A few years ago, I was using tapiirik to sync data. GREATEST phase of my gps data ever.

    1. Edge 1000 would sync up to Garmin connect

    2. i had some time to name the activity before tapiirik would copy it from connect and push to a number of sites of my choosing.  So strava, ridewithgps, and even a dropbox folder got a copy, with a good named, searchable ride instead of "morning in sometown".

what happened unfortunately is that first garmin changed rules snd formats. do a new user would no longer sync his past activities, and in new activities what was served was not the second by second track, but a very coarse one.

corporate greed wanting to retain user control killed yet another great tool.

I wish I could rename rides in connect BEFORE it propagates to strava, ridewithgps, etc.  wouldn't be that difficult for Garmin to add such setting "wait for renaming, with a timeout".

as far as sllowing the device to keep a million courses, even on a "slow" cpu, indexing or searching shouldn't be a big deal.  same for rides.  it is just legacy from times where a 4 bit mpu was struggling with slow flash and limited ram. makes no sense now - other than poor coders or their managers.

i use ridewithgps for route planning, pinning routes there to just magically appear on the edge 1040 - best way to keep full name not truncated to short - and know the (dumb) limit has been reached when the route doesnt show on the device right away.

one stupid thing is that when more than 100 activities are on your history on the device and an update comes and you foolishly accept it before a backup, the device keeps the OLDEST 100, not the newest.  dumb...

  • How many locations can be saved in the Edge 1040 Solar?

  • 200 (according to the specs on Garmin’s website).
