Fed up with Garmin device limits

The Garmin 1040 has 32GB RAM and several GB's free. Nonetheless, Garmin thinks it is wise to set hard limits.

There is a hard maximum of 100 routes and 200 activities. This leads to problems. I can't sync new routes unless I delete some other routes. But the number of routes in use is nowhere to be seen, neither is there a message when you try to sync a route when there are already 100 routes on the device. The sync just fails without explanation.

Same for the activities. Today my last activity could not be stored because I suspect I hit the limit of 200, so the ride was lost.

So, to overcome these limits, I must regularly manually remove old files from the device to keep the device functioning. Seen how modern the Garmin 1040 is, manual interaction is unacceptable.

I would like Garmin to fix a few things:

- Add an option in the menu to see how many routes and activities are on the device

- At 90% of the limit, please warn the user

- Make it easier to archive routes and activities to another device.

- And the most important: Set the limits much higher. We have GB's of free space. Routes and activities are only a few KB in size. Limits could easily be set to 1000 or more.

  • I’m trying to understand what the issue is here for routes,

The issue is that the devices have a limit of 100 courses and there is no notification when that happens. The way you find out is newly uploaded courses “disappear”.

    There should be a notification.

It’s really old behavior. People have been complaining about it for years. Interestingly, it’s not a lot of people.

Given that it’s still present in the latest units, it doesn’t seem to be something that will ever be changed.

Garmin will never add the filter/search/file-management stuff that a few people here are asking for.

  • some people like potatoes somevprefer tomatoes.

it works great for you, but allow others to prefer to have 500 routes, 1000 tracks, 500 waypoints.  you don't have to fill it.  :-)

The problem is that there are many people who prefer “potatoes” and very few people who prefer “tomatoes”.

While it’s fine to like tomatoes, that, by itself, isn’t a reason for a restaurant to sell them.

  • in this thread i only count one tater lover, claiming to be a majority.

it has been fun.  pity garmin doesn't have time or capability to fix bugs, and this certainly doesn't cause a freeze, data loss (if you don't counr the 101st course download), so it might be never addressed.

i dreamt of an open source edge 1040.  imagine how faster bugs would be fixed, how much more stable, new relevant features would pop up. you could build your own, or choose from the tomato, the potato or even the brussel sprouts branch.

what is really hard to understand is what kind of management at garmin choses to add a feature to show you attached images in messages, BEFORE fixing the existing bugs.  email sent to registered users about it shows a guy on a gravel bike looking at his unit with some picture.  what next?  facebook feeds?  all i want is a unit that routes me correctly...

People who are fine with the status quo don’t tend to post about it. People who aren’t, tend to be much more vocal.

If there were lots of people (nowhere near a “majority”), you’d see more than three people here complaining.

Yet, only about three people here care about “tomatoes”.

If a significant number of people cared about filtering/searching/file-management for courses, you’d see more threads about it in more subforums. Historically, very, very few people complain about it. This is the only thread I’ve seen complain about it.

Many more people complain about the lack of a limit notification but, even there, it’s not many people.

If you want bugs to be fixed before new features are added, you shouldn’t be asking for new features (especially features that not many people care about).

  • It’s much easier to get routes on devices these days so this will affect an increasing number of people. There will be a fix at some point.

  • One way to see where things are going is to look at watches as they tend to get features first. While it seems the 100 course limit remains on watches, the newest ones have a limit of 1000 waypoints/locations (vs 200 on current edges) and activities only limited by storage (vs 200 hours on the 1040).

  • (vs 200 hours on the 1040).

It's not "200 total hours". Maybe, each activity can't be more that 200 hours. But people routinely have many more total hours than 200.

It appears the Edges can hold 200 separate activities and drops the oldest one to make room.

The 1040 should be new enough to have higher limits than the 800 (a 10+ old unit).

  • Only going by what it says in specifications but does seem very low. 200 activities would make more sense but who knows.

  • What I am saying is the wording in the specification is wrong.

It doesn’t make sense. It would be a lot of work to cut off the list of files after 200 hours (what would it do if that limit happened in the middle of a file?). No one would program it that way.

@cycleanalyze did the experiment (page 3) that confirmed it was 200 files.

  • Where is this documented at? Do you have a link?
