Fed up with Garmin device limits

The Garmin 1040 has 32GB RAM and several GB's free. Nonetheless, Garmin thinks it is wise to set hard limits.

There is a hard maximum of 100 routes and 200 activities. This leads to problems. I can't sync new routes unless I delete some other routes. But the number of routes in use is nowhere to be seen, neither is there a message when you try to sync a route when there are already 100 routes on the device. The sync just fails without explanation.

Same for the activities. Today my last activity could not be stored because I suspect I hit the limit of 200, so the ride was lost.

So, to overcome these limits, I must regularly manually remove old files from the device to keep the device functioning. Seen how modern the Garmin 1040 is, manual interaction is unacceptable.

I would like Garmin to fix a few things:

- Add an option in the menu to see how many routes and activities are on the device

- At 90% of the limit, please warn the user

- Make it easier to archive routes and activities to another device.

- And the most important: Set the limits much higher. We have GB's of free space. Routes and activities are only a few KB in size. Limits could easily be set to 1000 or more.

    That's terrible behavior I agree.

You can make a folder inside Garmin/Activities and call it whatever you want and dunk old files in there.

That's what I have done to speed up the time it takes WKO to import files from the garmin. My "old" folder contains a zillion files.

  • What happens if you lose or break your device?

It's not a good idea to archive activities on the device.

  • >Does it remove the files from the Edge after the copy?

No, I just copy them. However, I have removed all of the maps that I don't use, and I purchased the $100 Topo 24k West, which covers my area with really good detail on the road or trails.

You're correct that all of Garmin's files are not legible, but I keep copies of everything in case the head unit dies. If you've ever lost data to data heaven you know where I'm coming from.  :)

  • No, I just copy them.

If you don't remove the activity/course files, you'll run into the issue mentioned in the first post.

  • Agreed. I manually delete the oldest activities when I charge the head unit.

Yeah I agree, and I make a local copy on my Mac too. The fit files are also in Garmin Connect, and they're in WKO as well. And Strava and xert etc

  • I know this is a bit old, but I hit the 100 course limit the other day and was beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why it wouldn't show up. In fact, if you use the ConnectIQ app like RideWithGPS and download it, it will say it downloaded fine and then still not show up.

Even worse, when I used the "Download & Ride" option in RideWithGPS, it just straight up caused the GPS to reboot. I assume it downloaded the file and then tried to load a file that didn't exist. It seems like Garmin's own API's don't report this behavior correctly.

I don't even understand the Activity limit, am I supposed to just go and purge my older activities? 200 doesn't even get me through a single year of riding since I ride almost every day.

What are you doing with the activities on the device?

The activities normally get uploaded to the Garmin Connect website. You can export activities from the website.

Yes, you are supposed to delete the activities from the device. Usually, there aren’t many reasons to keep them on the device.

  • I'm not doing anything with them, but the device should manage that for me. Same for the courses as mentioned earlier. Not recording a ride b/c there are too many activities is the cardinal sin of a device like this. When activity number 201 is added, it should purge the last one. It's just lazy programming IMO.

  • I believe the oldest one is deleted to make room for the current ride.
