Map updates Brand new 1040

My brand new 1040 wont update MAPs, it keeps failing. The installed maps are 2021!

I believe I need updated maps for the auto climb pro.

Anyone else having issues. I have been onto the chat who suggested deleting some files but it failed again.

Any ideas. I am using a Window 10 PC

  • that's not true whatsoever. both hammerhead and wahoo devices have pretty robust climb databases as well. in fact, the premise behind garmin adding free climbing was in response to their 2 competitors either already having it or having it come VERY soon (wahoo)

EDIT: i was wrong as i completely misunderstood what he was saying here

  • Please Educate me.

How on the Hammerhead or Wahoo do you find an HC climb with 20 miles or your current location.

Free climb detection does not need or use a database of climbs. It use map data and DEM to project a path and from that determine if it can find a climb.

Searching for climbs anywhere from your current location needs a database of climbs as the path is not known.

  • maybe i'm misunderstanding what you're saying. hammerhead, wahoo and now garmin all have free climbpro-type systems whereby nearby climbs will be listed outside of course navigation, the climbs are recognized and the screen will switch to a colored elevation gradient during the climb. your contention is that the other brands don't have this?

  • Yes we are talking about different things.

When riding outside of a course all the products will detect climbs. They use a similar approach, which is on the fly climb generation. This uses map data for possible path networks that you can take, combined with terrain information and DEM data (elevation).

What the products are doing is using predictive logic to project a path forward using your current direction of travel and location using the path network data on the map and combining this with the elevation data to generate elevation profiles which they then search for climbs. This does not require a database of all climbs in the region. It is built off of the maps and DEM data that the units already had. This is how Hammerhead and Wahoo could deliver it through a software update only. It did not need new maps.

What Garmin did in addition was to pre-process all the maps for a given region and look for all climbs that meet a specified criteria. They then took that information and built a database of these climbs. It is these databases that take up the additional space when you install or re-install the maps. There is not actually any change to the maps.

What those databases allow you to do on the Edge, which you cannot do on the other products currently is to search a given region for climbs that meet your search criteria and return a list of matches. You can then review those matches, see the path they take, look at their elevation profile. Select them for the unit to navigate you to the start. Without a database of climbs this type of area search is not possible because the number of possible paths. The computation time would be too long.

The “Climb Explore” widget has sorting and filtering options.

    • Search Radius (Defaults to 10 miles or 15 Km)

    • Minimum climb difficulty (Uncategorized to HC)

    • Maximum climb difficulty (Uncategorized to HC)

    • Terrain Type (Paved, Unpaved, Mixed)

    • Sort by (Nearest, Ascent, Length, Grade)

    • Sort Order (Ascending Descending)

This also allows  the Edge to show the starting points of climbs on the map that are not on your projected path. The red mountain icons are climbs in the area. Only one of these is on the projected path.

  • After updating the Edge 1040 to the latest Firmware version (17.26)  you have to do in order:

    1. Uninstall all your maps from Edge 1040 (using Garmin Express)
    2. Ejecting the device from Garmin Express
    3. Disconnecting the USB cable
    4. Reconnecting the USB cable and remount the device
    5. Installing all the maps you want to use
    6. Ejecting again the device from Garmin Express
    7. Disconnecting another time the USB cable

Pay attention: if you try to install or to update the maps on the device, before to install the Firmware 17.26, then the new ClimbPRO data for free ride are not downloaded and the feature is not enabled.

Once you have installed the new maps you can check that everything works fine in 3 simple ways:

    1. Open the new widget to search for near climbs, and if you can see some climbs listed it means the climb pro data for the maps is working
    2. You can go to navigate open the map and search if ther is the new mountain symble at the base of every climbs
    3. Select an activity profile, go to Navigation > Map > Map Information and check if there are ClimbPro map data (you need to see some ClimbPro-* entries)

The third one is the standard procedure to check the feature is enabled. And you can have more details here:

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=zdggRttcfT4PGwTbfifMY5 (How Do I Verify the ClimbPro Maps Are Enabled?)

  • You can also look in the Garmin\SQL\Internal folder on the Edge for the DB files.

  • ah i understand now. i withdraw my protest lol

btw, where is this climb explore widget? i'm reading about it but cannot for the life of me find it

  • It is in the widget loop that you access by swiping down from the top of the screen.

You may need to add it by using the System -> Widgets

  • Where do I see the administer maps option as I do not see that in my Garmin Express?
