Map updates Brand new 1040

My brand new 1040 wont update MAPs, it keeps failing. The installed maps are 2021!

I believe I need updated maps for the auto climb pro.

Anyone else having issues. I have been onto the chat who suggested deleting some files but it failed again.

Any ideas. I am using a Window 10 PC

  • Did you delete the old maps before installing the new ones? If not, try to delete/remove the current maps before you install the new ones.

In Garmin Express choose administer maps, then uncheck all maps and hit continue/finish. Then go back into administer maps and check the maps you need.

  • Thanks, I will try that, I am worried I might end up with no maps

  • I did the same yesterday, and I had no problem. The only thing you should be aware of is that installing the new maps on the edge unit will take some time. So be sure that you don’t update the maps just before you are going for a ride ;)

  • I removed the US maps in manage maps, then updated the Euro map. It worked.

There is now no longer space for the US maps to be re-installed. This is a bit poor, Garmin help didn't know that. I suppose, if I travel I will have to remove and install the different maps when I go, not great, I was sold a unit with both maps.

Did you manage to get both maps on your edge 1040?

  • Same happened to me. On my new 1040 I had worldwide maps. Once I upgraded to the new climb pro maps there was only enough storage space for Europe (where I live). The reason you can't have all maps is due to the file size of the new climb pro maps. Due to the inclusion of the climbs data, the map sizes exploded. Unit space is finite so something had to go.

  • You can install the whole of one region and a subset of another. (Europe and North Americas)

  • I suppose, if I travel I will have to remove and install the different maps when I go, not great, I was sold a unit with both maps.

The 1040 should have enough room for most (if not all) maps. It’s possible that, based on the problem you first described, that a map appeared to not be installed but the file still occupied space.

Note that, for traveling outside of your home region, you can get free maps for custom regions (which are much, much smaller). While this isn’t what you want, it’s useful to keep this in mind as an option. This would also give you very current maps (often, with updates from two weeks prior).

  • The new  ClimbPro database files asscoaited with each map will take up a lot of space. Especially for the whole of Europe,

You have enough space to do the whole of Europe and 1 region of the Americas or the whole of North America and think 2 or 3 regions of Europe. Depending on which regions you select.

  • Hmm. I wonder if the Karoo has a climb database of if it’s better at guessing climbs. The extra space used might be part of why Garmin isn’t adding the feature to the 1030+.

  • Only the Garmin products have climb databases. This is how they support the ability to do climb searching by browsing the map or from the Climb Explore widget. This allows you to find and select a climb, and then navigate to the start.

None of the other vendors that support in climb detection support any type of climb searching. They project a path up the road to find climbs, as does the Edge, but they don't let you find climbs in a given radius or by searching the map.
