Elevation and GPS precision in wet condition - ISSUE

Hi guys,

I recently bought a EDGE 1040 device. I have been using it for some times now. I live in Belgium, a really wet country.
I noticed that everytime it is raining and there is water on the screen, the elevation goes wrong (elevation gets stuck) AND the GPS sees me on another path close by, which is very annoying coz the device wants to recalculate the route all the time.
I've been using a Fenix 6X watch and I've never experienced such a trouble.
I must add that I always make sure that the cover at the bottom of the unit is correctly closed !

I know there are already some subjects regarding this issue, but my question is :

- should I return the device and hope for a new one that will never have that issue OR they will all be the same ? (talking about the same unit of course).

Thanks for your answers.

Brice

  • So currently on the Edge if the elevation is a long way off from what it should be it can impact the GPS track. Garmin are aware off this issue and have told me that the next maintenance release will address this.

The barometric port for the elevation is behind the USB flap so make sure that is in place. Otherwise there is not much you can do to stop water getting in the port.

  • I don't really get it. Why on the Fenix 6x (which has a barometric included) there is no problem? Right after swimming I can cycle and never have that issue.. It can be completly submerged and works flawlessly everytimes.

  • They use very different designs and I would assume costs. The Fenix is rated to 100 atm, while the Edge is IPX7

  • It's the most expensive Edge unit Garmin sells.. It should work perfectly.. It's an hardware issue, can't be solved via update Disappointed Could it be the little string (to prevent the device from falling) that conducts water close to the port ?

  • I have all the problems mentioned, when it's been more than 6 months since you bought a fortune this gps, you expect to be able to use it, it is for me scandalous not to have a stable and usable minimum product with the functions described by garmin.
Why are updates so infrequent for the edge 1040?
I have an FR945 which gets even more updates than the 1040 while the FR945 is stable.

  • Im also in Belgium, ride a lot in the rain in the wet, never seen this issue on my 1040 (non solar) if that matters. There is a setting to increase the GPS accuracy that uses more battery, this uses the US EU & possibly also the Russian set of satellites. or it could be something to do with having snap to road turned on...its a setting also?  Or its a faulty unit...call support & get a fixed one.

  • Alas, it looks like Garmin hasn't changed anything with v17.26, yesterday I had this problem for the second time in 15 days, with light rain

  • I had the problem mentioned once, but with an 840 non solar,fw 09.09, during my ride, I then completely deactivated the GPS and  reactivated it again, after that, it worked without any problems for the rest of the rainy ride, and hasn't happened again since. Problem on 1040 and 840, so could be a general x40 problem?

  • When you say you have disabled the gps, does that completely shut down the edge unit?
    Or just disable satellite reception?

  • The edge just kept running, only the satellite reception was interrupted for a few seconds on the screennshot the moment, were i did the off/on thing (happend by the „blue cyrcle“…before, gps was around 200m off
