Speed Sensor 2 firmware update fails…how to disable the nagging?

My 1040 keeps nagging me to update my Speed Sensor 2 from firmware 4.00 to 4.10, and keeps failing, and failing, and failing, and faoling. Rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. I’ve also tried pairing it to Garmin Connect , but that also fails.

Nice work Garmin SQ QA….not! OK, I am defeated now. How can I just stop my Garmin from nagging me about a firmware update all the time, when the updater clearly is a software mess and doesn’t work. I don’t even want to update it at this point. The sensor works, and the update is just as likely to introduce some annoying regression vs improving anything. I’m tempted to just stop using the Speed Sensor and find one of my old 1st gen sensors to use instead.

  • Same problem here. Every ride. Every time I pause the ride. "Update to 4.10?". So annoying. Been going on for 6 months.

  • Yeah, I might just do without, or use a Wahoo instead. A long time ago I compared the accuracy using a speed sensor and using just the GPS, and on a 6 mile path they were close enough. I may try that again to verify and decide to stop using the sensor altogether.

  • I'm lucky that all my speed sensors are much older versions.  I'm still using magnet based GSC10s on my two road bikes.  One is ~13  years old.   I do find speed sensors beneficial in that auto-pause works more reliably...and I believe they improve speed/distance/grade accuracy mtbing where the tracks and up/downs can be pretty tortuous.

  • Yeah, for MTB you do need a speed sensor. GPS isn't reliable enough, especially with all the switchbacks on singletracks. That's not so much a concern for road and gravel.

  • I just updated my speedsensor as well, and during the first ride I was also continuously in auto=pause mode...so I had to disconnect the speedsensor during the ride. When uploading my ride I had 5 parts of my ride  (before I turned off the speed sensor)...this is not the way to I want to ride with a speed sensr...

Did you manage to solve this? Is there a way to get back to the previous software version?

  • I solved this by not using the broken Speed Sensor. I have another that is on firmware 2.30 and I ignore the nagging to update (as annoying as it is).

I have some older Speed Sensor (1) so I may just put one of those to use.

  • Same.

But every ride: UPDATE TO 4.10? REMIND ME

    UPDATE TO 4.10? REMIND ME

I would love a "Don't ever ask me again" option.

  • The Garmin 1040 16.11 firmware update apparently fixed the Speed Sensor 2 v4.10 problem for me. I used it for a ride today and it didn't pause the ride while still at speed. I can stop worrying about the update nagging for now, but I would still like a feature to disable the update prompts if I don't want them.

  • I had the same error (ver.2.3) trying to update to ver.4.10. Always finished with an error (the progress bar froze and the message "update again?" appears after a minute). Updated from the watch. Tried on two bikes with the same result.

What helped me only in the end was taking my bike 100m out of civilization (no other device interference), removing the speed sensor from the wheel putting it directly next to the cadency sensor and putting the watch directly on both sensors, and confirming the update message again. (both bikes successfully)

To invoke a sensor update I just start bike activity on my watch (with both sensors connected) and stop the activity after 30 sec and save the activity. Then the message that an update is available appears.

    Hope it helps you also.
