Speed Sensor 2 firmware update fails…how to disable the nagging?

My 1040 keeps nagging me to update my Speed Sensor 2 from firmware 4.00 to 4.10, and keeps failing, and failing, and failing, and faoling. Rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. I’ve also tried pairing it to Garmin Connect , but that also fails.

Nice work Garmin SQ QA….not! OK, I am defeated now. How can I just stop my Garmin from nagging me about a firmware update all the time, when the updater clearly is a software mess and doesn’t work. I don’t even want to update it at this point. The sensor works, and the update is just as likely to introduce some annoying regression vs improving anything. I’m tempted to just stop using the Speed Sensor and find one of my old 1st gen sensors to use instead.

  • Maybe this is the deal for you

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/320325/new-edge-1040-series-version-15-24-now-available

Changes made from version 15.23 to 15.24:
Fixed incorrect failure message sometimes being shown for sensor software update

  • I saw that. It doesn't say it fixes the problem. It says it fixes an erroneous failure message.

  • I had the same behavior two days ago. But, as I was recording the ride on both my devices(Edge 1040 and Fenix 7), the update message came on the Fenix 7(never saw it on the Edge unit)

I've tried for 5 times to perform the update from the watch, it successfully failed each time. And I gave up. Then I've got a low battery warning of the speed sensor on the Edge unit. In the recorded ride data the battery status was marked as OK for the speed sensor.

Got into my house, changed the sensor and that's all. Did not connected, yet, again to the sensor to see if I'm getting the update message or not

  • I've just checked my speed sensor version and it seems to be 2.3.

I do not remember seeing the SW version number information when it said a new update is to be done.

But..... just realized it was telling me "Spd/cadence sw update" and, considering also this info https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/rally/320372/new-rally-100-200-version-4-10-now-available, I'm now thinking it was trying, in fact, to update my Rally pedals SW, not the speed sensor.

do you happen to own also Garmin Rally pedals? Maybe this where the issue comes from

IMPORTANT: Before installing a software update, Garmin recommends that the batteries be replaced in your Rally pedals if they have not been recently changed. The software update may fail to install if the batteries do not have sufficient life left.

  • No, you're describing something else altogether. I don't know what Speed Sensor v2.3 is. That must be the old generation sensor. I have Speed Sensor2 v4.00.

I don't have the Garmin Rally pedals, so this doesn't apply to me.

  • Ok, Mea culpa

My Speed Snrsor2(have since a long time) has version 2.3 on it, according to the info from the last ride

  • In the end I got the update to work, but only by pairing my sensor to the Garmin Connect app on my iPhone and doing the update from there. It was a complete PITA! It took about 5 tries to pair the device, and then another several tries to get the update to complete successfully.

This is ludicrous. Garmin needs to fix this crappy and fragile process. What a horrible user experience.

My original question stands. Is there a way I can diable sensor firmware update noitifications from nagging me constantly on my 1040. It get's tiring and interferes with use. Sensor firmware updating is far more trouble than it's worth.

I think at the this point the correct solution might be to use third party sensors instead. I may do that from now on.

  • 1040 with 15.24 and still getting sensor firmware update failure Disappointed

  • Based on my recent experience with an updated speed sensor, you might not want to firmware update. I finally got mine to update using the Connect app on my phone. On my next ride my 1040 kept going into Auto-Pause mode at speed, which means it stops recording. I had to disable Auto-Pause for the rest of the ride. I learned later that happens when there are issues with the Speed Sensor. Today I rode with one from another bike that isn on firmware 2.30 and it all worked just fine.

Which now brings me back to my initial request with even greater priority. Is there a way to disable the 1040 from nagging me about upgrading sensor firmware. If the sensor is working I'd rather not be bothered, espeically with the long-running disaster that is Garmin software QA.

  • I completely gave up and use a.n.other speed sensor now. The garmin one and its updates are such a p.I.t.a. That’s it’s just not worth the suffering !
