Why doesn't the Garmin 1040 come with all the topo like Fenix Epix?

The Edge devices contain no topo map. It contains the Garmin Cycle Maps. The TopoActive maps are for outdoors devices and can be found on the Fenix and eTrex type of devices. Both set of maps are optimized differently for different use cases.

That is a great question. I am going to need to check mine when I get home now to see if I have any topo maps available to me. I thought all of mine were cycling maps

The Edges don't include topo maps.

I'm going to guess the presence of the topo Africa map is related to you having an Epix. That is, it's some sort of database issue on the Garmin website.

I only have Garmin edge devices, no watches and I too have the Africa Topo maps , in fact loaded (AU & NZ, Europe & Africa) on the device and listed on express, I guess the reason maybe that there might be no cycling maps for Africa?

Correct. Garmin does not have a separate cycling map for Africa so users the the Topo map. The Topo maps contain the same data, but they just don't carry the cycling naming. 

Hi, are you able to clarify what the differences actually are (beyond naming)? Suspect either routing related info, and/or a different visual emphasis on differing types of roads and trails?

Just checked my 1040 solar, In have both the Topoactive Africa 2022.0 and the Routable Cycle Map of Africa 2023 as well as cycle maps of Europe, america, Australia and New Zealand. No idea why

there are different SKU's based on where they are sold and the preloaded maps vary based on those regions
