Better Visibility on Map Screen -Feature Request

After a several year break from Garmin (first using a Wahoo, then a Hammerhead Karoo 2) I’m back to Garmin with the Edge 1040 and I’m loving it! I have a Fr955 and having everything sync up, eliminating the need for an Apple Watch and/or Whoop band is awesome! So first off thanks to the Garmin team for continuing to help push things forward.

One change I would like to see and I’m hoping others will agree and can upvote or comment here is the visibility of the map, especially when navigating. I race Road, Gravel, and MTB. I find that on the road and really easy gravel the map screen is easy enough to look down long enough to see where you are and what’s ahead, but when riding rougher gravel, higher speed gravel, or MTB in general it is extremely hard to see where you are on the screen and what’s coming up next. I think this is caused a lack in contrast between roads/trails that matter compared to everything else as well as the triangle indicator representing where I am being so small and also a lack of contrast. I’ve added some images of a Wahoo Roam where you can see the navigation path is extremely visible both by contrast and size. I’ve also added an image of the Karoo 2 which has an even larger indicator of your current position and they also make your current route (where you’ve been and where you’re going) drastically stand out simply by using more extreme contrast. I hope this is something we can have changed in the next update.

Note, I am 34 and don’t need perscription glasses, nor am I color blind, sight is totally normal.

  • I second this. For my Audax, night riding in rain, high contrast is essential. I have refitted my old Wahoo ELEMNT for quick looking at the course ahead, whilst the Garmin 1040 is there for route recording —- a very expensive track logger!
(I far prefer the ELEMNT vertical profile field - stand 2kms range, over whatever is being displayed on the 1040’s map).

  • Please make a feature for color management of the map plot, especially for color blind people. Karoo is a good example.

  • BIGGER "ME"TRIANGLE. Yes, please. It's hard to see even on cobble roads in a city sometimes!

  • I totally agree with you for MTB riding the Garmin 1040 is useless I bought mine two days ago and took it on a 30 mile off-road journey and the amount of times I had to stop to try and figure out where I was supposed to go because everything on the sat nav screen is so small that it is literally useless. I called support today to express my disappointment with such an expensive item that doesn't perform, and they  hung up on me. I'm sending the Garmin back and I'm getting a karoo 2 ,which I've had before and it is far better for navigation.

  • I found a new stove settings turned off auto zoom altogether and then zoomed in as much as it would it's still far too small for MTB riding also I had to have the brightness on full and in three hours I used 60% of the battery on the same ride on my old Karoo 2 I used 20% battery

  • Very helpful, but we shouldn't have to be hacking our garmin devices. They should already be configured perfectly.

  • I am on the verge of getting rid of mine and going back to wahoo I simply cannot navagate especially through built up areas the blue "Me Icon" is tiny and does not stand out - I have set my tracks to red but they look pink and I can see multiple tracks (maybe options) that reall confuse things. Please sort this garmin I love the solar but at the detriment of it actually being a usefull tool to navigate with.

  • I wish I'd never bought my 1040 it's a huge waste of money.  The navigation on this device is very difficult due to everything being too small and poorly thought out icons when on a trail and coming to a junction the Garmin Edge 1040 does not zoom in on aproch to highlight details on the maps. I always take the wrong trail and waste my time going back on myself. Garmin are useless devices and the developers don't have a clue.

  • I completely understand your frustration with the Garmin Edge 1040. I myself have experienced similar issues and share your feelings of regret. Everything was so small and poorly arranged, making the device very difficult to use. I too often ended up taking the wrong trail and wasting time retracing my steps.

However, I have recently found a solution that works well for me. I switched to the Karoo 2, and since then, I no longer face these issues. The interface is intuitive and the map details are well highlighted, which allows me to choose my path correctly. I think it's an option you might consider. In any case, I totally agree with you, Garmin devices really need improvement.

  • You know you've made a mistake with a product costing almost £500 when you have to pull your mobile phone out and get directions off the komoot app on your phone. It's astonishing how a mobile app Komoot on an Android phone can navigate flawlessly and yet the Garmin device just gets you lost. I'm going to try and sell my Garmin Edge 1040 to some other sucker and probably just use the komoot app on the phone. I think it's pointless holding your breath waiting for Garmin to improve on the product as I truly don't think they care.
