Lower the Edge 1040 beep volume?

I got my Edge 1040 today, but the navigation beeps are really loud (in my opinion). I do like the beeps, just not that loud. Is there any way to lower the volume? I feel like I looked through the whole menu, but all I could find is a toggle switch to turn the sound off. Maybe a piece of tape over the speaker holes on the back does the trick, but workarounds like that shouldn't be necessary, right?

  • I also just got a new Edge 1040 and would like to increase the volume!  But I have the same issue - how do you adjust the volume?  I also see a toggle - but we need a way to adjust the volume system wide up or down.

  • There is no volume control available on the Edge units.

  • Do you know if there are plans to add it? A volume control feels like basic functionality to me. I mean, if you bought a phone or a radio that doesn't have volume control, you would probably bring it back. Maybe you can't really compare a phone to a cycling computer, but I'm just saying you would expect a volume control on any device where sound is an important feature.

  • I don't know, but I suspect it is a limitation of the beeper in that you can only control the frequency and duration.

  • That could be the case indeed. Well, if anyone else is trying to lower the volume: a piece of tape over the speaker holes on the back works fine.

  • An update on my volume problem. While I absolutely agree that there should be a system wide volume control - what I was referring to was the audio navigation prompts. These are via the linked phone not the 1040. Due to a total lack of instructions, I did not realize this and put my phone in a handlebar bag. Even those the volume was at max, I could barely hear it. On my second ride with the 1040, I put my phone in a Jersey pocket and it was a bit better, although my wife riding with me got the benefit of the prompts. What I would like to ask the Garmin 1040 engineers is “ how do you expect the user to actually use this feature”. I normally ride with my phone in a protective case that would muffle the sound. Is the use case that the phone is also mounted on the handlebars?  The obvious solution is to run the audio prompts though the 1040 speaker!

I believe the 1040 is like all previous Edge devices in that it doesn't have a speaker capable of reproducing intelligible audio at reasonable volume.  It has a piezo sounder, which can really only do variations of beeps.

  • I wear an earbud in the curb side ear (In the USA, that would be the right ear)

  • I agree that the new 1040 tone’s are a little too loud. I run the Varia radar/light also and in busy traffic i sound like a 1990’s Nintendo Gameboy. On stopping at traffic lights with other cyclists, i draw everyone’s attention with the alerts as other vehicles approach the Red light. Love the Varia, love the 1040 but would have been nice to have a ‘low’ and ‘high’ setting. Tape sounds like the only solution as I don’t feel comfortable with a headphone in my ear. Glad not just me thinking this
