Lower the Edge 1040 beep volume?

I got my Edge 1040 today, but the navigation beeps are really loud (in my opinion). I do like the beeps, just not that loud. Is there any way to lower the volume? I feel like I looked through the whole menu, but all I could find is a toggle switch to turn the sound off. Maybe a piece of tape over the speaker holes on the back does the trick, but workarounds like that shouldn't be necessary, right?

  • Not possible today but I totally agree this should be possible.  This device is a similar price to an iPhone, so some form of volume control you think would be a basic expectation.

I am hoping a future software update will allow for this, or at least allow for some of the beeps to be toggled on an off and not just one toggle that turns off every sound. While volume may not be possible, it seems viable to turn some of the sounds on and off selectively is only a software issue.....

A fair number of people complain the devices are too complicated to use.

If there was an on/off toggle, there would be some people who would be calling Garmin about something being broken. That is, adding the option would not be without cost.

  • The obvious solution is to run the audio prompts though the 1040 speaker!

The audio prompts (the text to speech) is being done on the phone.

In any case, the noise maker on the device isn't going to be up to reproducing speech that would be comprehensible.

  • Complicated? Rather little configurable.
Let's reverse the situation. Maybe now many people are calling Garmin looking for how to turn down or turn off some sounds, or "why there are no sounds" (because he turned them off)?
This is the manual to explain how the system works.
Anyway, do people using Android phones use manuals? Maybe they don't have to, because the system is intuitive.

  • What's complicated is using the device overall. The toggle is another thing that adds to that complexity.

I'm not saying the feature isn't useful. I'm just saying adding has a cost.

People do web searches all the time to figure out how to do stuff on their phones. So, no, not "intuitive" at all.

It seems that Hammerhead doesn't think it's that important (they did talk about adding it 3 years ago but don't appear to have done so yet).
