Edge 1040 Solar touch screen not reacting (but device not entirely frozen)

Hi Forum,

I upgraded from an Edge 1030 Plus to the new Edge 1040 Solar. Multiple times during rides the touch screen is not reacting to touches and swipes anymore. After some seconds (~20-120 seconds) it usually unfreezes itself and works again. But this pattern repeats during the ride multiple times.

I made a video of one of the instances that this happens: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTc6E7FXPuV38yMu5

You can see that I was riding and that the Edge thought I was not on track anymore and offered me to reroute or pause navigation. It is not reacting to my touches of the button "pause navigation". Also any other input on the touch screen is not registered at all. FYI: It does not only happen when a popup comes up, it also happens randomly and I only notice because I try to swipe to the next data screen (which then does not work) or when I try to open the swipe-down-menu. The device itself still reacts on hardware-button-presses but not on touch screen presses and swipes anymore.

Usually it unfreezes after a while. Sometimes I need to hard reset the device mid ride.

Do I have a faulty device? Do I need to send it back? Or is this just very bard firmware?

Best, Reto

Edit: I am on firmware 12.16.

  • I can confirm that the touch screen bug is still present on 14.20. It had gotten better since I updated from 12 series to 14.14 beta upwards and had no issues for 5-6 rides. Unfortunately just today, I had touch screen issues the entire bike ride today. Before and after starting navigation.

  • Bonjour,

J'ai eu le même problème, jai acheté le edge 1040 il y a 3 jours, et je rencontre déjà plusieurs bug décrits sur le forum.

  • Just to update everyone, the freezes on my unit seem to happen every ride now. After talking with Garmin support they are aware and have recommended an RMA. I will let the thread know how the next unit fares.
