Edge 1040 Solar touch screen not reacting (but device not entirely frozen)

Hi Forum,

I upgraded from an Edge 1030 Plus to the new Edge 1040 Solar. Multiple times during rides the touch screen is not reacting to touches and swipes anymore. After some seconds (~20-120 seconds) it usually unfreezes itself and works again. But this pattern repeats during the ride multiple times.

I made a video of one of the instances that this happens: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTc6E7FXPuV38yMu5

You can see that I was riding and that the Edge thought I was not on track anymore and offered me to reroute or pause navigation. It is not reacting to my touches of the button "pause navigation". Also any other input on the touch screen is not registered at all. FYI: It does not only happen when a popup comes up, it also happens randomly and I only notice because I try to swipe to the next data screen (which then does not work) or when I try to open the swipe-down-menu. The device itself still reacts on hardware-button-presses but not on touch screen presses and swipes anymore.

Usually it unfreezes after a while. Sometimes I need to hard reset the device mid ride.

Do I have a faulty device? Do I need to send it back? Or is this just very bard firmware?

Best, Reto

Edit: I am on firmware 12.16.

  • I’m having the same issue the pause icon is greyed out and does not respond. Logged a ticket with garmin as is very much does look like a firmware issue.

  • Hi, but this does not necessarily mean it is the same problem. Because for me the touch screen does not work at all. Not only this button. For example when this problem happens, I can also not swipe right or left to change the data screen (even though there is no pop up message like in my video).

  • Reset it to factory defaults

if you have possibility try to check same with one of your friends or even at the Garmin reseller

  • Factory reset I tried twice already. Second time I did not transfer the Sensors and Settings from my Connect Profile to make sure that this is not the cause.

I have no other 1040 to compare it too.

  • Does the unit have touch sensitivity settings? If yes, have you adjusted them?

  • No, with new interface, or new touch they removed touch sensitivity, and glad that they did

  • I have the same problem.  I just bought mine and got it all set up.  I played with it a few times and the screen froze, but then started working again.  On the 3rd time it froze it never recovered.  I can't do anything with the screen, but the buttons work.  Garmin said they never had this problem, but it shows in their website what to do if it does freeze, so they must have this problem.  They are out of stock until mid Aug, so I have to wait for a new one.  I spent a lot of money for a device that I've never used and have to wait to try again.  Very disappointed.

  • Apparently not everyone on Firmware 12.16 is affected. Otherwise we would have had much more feedback of people saying that it happens for them too. Therefore I decided to ship my unit back and ask for a replacement. I will keep you posted if that was successful.

  • I noticed this on the previous firmware, perhaps the touch sensitivity is lower due to the solar differences on the device?

Perhaps the firmware should alter sensitivity to account for this if it's the case?

  • I just got the same problem here with 1040 (not solar). Suspect it came after upgrading firmware to 12.16.
