Navigation "data screen" field not populating properly (I think).

I would like the "destination" field to show the name of the next course point.

I have "destination location" selected for the data field.

It remains blank. Courses I've tried have been built in Garmin Connect on a PC.

I don't see a "course point name" data field.

Any help is appreciated.

  • Course Points get added to their own dedicated page that will show the name given to them.

You can also use the "Next Waypoint" data field that will show you what you want.

  • The top field in the image I posted is set to "Next Waypoint" and shows the next navigation turn. It works properly.

It seems weird to have "Course point distance" but no option to show its name.

    So you can have:

1 - Name of road at next turn

    2 - distance to turn

3 - name of next course point

4 - distance to next course point

5 - distance to end of course

    Thank you

  • I agree, it is odd that there is no data field to display the next Course Point Name as these are available (as aweatherall says) in the Course Point (Up Ahead?) list and appear with the course point symbol on the map, it has been thus for 10+ years and complained about dozens (if not hundreds) of times, so there must be some dark garmin secret as to why, maybe they have lost the source code around these? • I feel into the course point, waypoint trap.

I know I submitted an enhancement request to add a course point description data field and mistakenly thought Next waypoint was it.

Let me do some testing next time I ride with a course with course points.

  • Thank you.

One time I did not start navigating properly (think I was adding a "power guide") so I was riding a course (not navigating) and the course point name was showing properly. I'll see if I can duplicate this.

  • I suspect that would work if Turn Guidance was not active, but currently switching that off does not actually switch it off.

  • Did a quick test. Loaded a course but did not navigate it. Course points are properly populated. It can't be difficult to fix this.

"Nyack Mart" should be populated with the next turn if I'm navigating.

The "Destination" should read "Nyack Mart" - the next Course point.

  • There does seem to be some (garmin) confusion regarding the implementation of course point related data fields. The 1040 manual says "Next Waypoint: The next point on the route. You must be navigating for this data to appear." It would be ideal if this worked for course points if you were not navigating, odd that it works for @2134471 but must be related to the "bug" where the "Turn Guidance" can not be disabled . On x30 devices there was a "Next Pt Location" field that said it was "The next point on the route or course." but I could never get it to display anything, this field does not seem to be on the 1040

  • PS The "Dist to Next" field in the above 530 screen also says "you must be navigating..." like the "Next Pt Location" but it displays the distance to the next course point  just like the "Crs Pt Dist" if not "navigating"

  • PSS A related issue on the 1040 (Ascent to Next Course Pt) shows Asc to next navigation point if navigating and Asc to next course pt if not navigating, these need to be made consistant

(reading the posts this seems to have been officially reported to Garmin)
