Edge 1040 Not powering on

I came to use my new Garmin the other day to find it completely flat, odd that the last time I used it & powered off it had >60% charge. Having since charged (which seems to take an absolute age), I’ve done a ride, powered off & the unit won’t now turn on? I’ve tried powering it via the wall & again nothing. It’s got a power symbol on the screen, but won’t do anything else. Has anyone else has this issue?

  • Same here.  I did the full reset (hold down lap and start buttons while powering up).   That finally worked.  Looks like we are the beta testers.

  • Happened to me today too. I wonder how many people need to have a problem until garmin starts caring.

Is the only solution hard reset and losing all settings? I wish I had seen this thread before buying this :/

  • Just press the power button for 20s and then it will start ok without loosing any settings.

  • After all other issues with the 1040, I am now having this. It started not powering on 2 days ago. It was intermittent, when I wanted to go on a ride it wouldn't work at all. Pressing all combinations of buttons for extended periods didn't help. Then just as was about to take a video to send to Garmin, it powered on. At this time I could power it on/off several times ok.

Now again this morning nothing. I did the "force mass storage" option and that worked. The device still had 85% battery power, so that is not the problem.

QUESTION: are Garmin going to do anything about this or should I send it back?

  • When you shut the unit down are you powering it off or putting it into sleep mode.

What software build is it on?

  • Thanks Phil, for me this did not work but I left the device alone for one hour and then it powered on normally. In my case I am suspecting it not liking colder temperatures because this happened when the device went to sleep after I completed the riding activity. It did get colder here last week when this happened though it was 8ºC still so not that cold either, but I wonder how much lower does it actually get with the wind and if it matters that I don’t have the silicone case (I thought it came with it but it didn’t so I still need to order one). It’s been warmer and sunnier after the occurrence for me and it did not happen again, so I don’t have enough data points.

if it happens again I will report back. At least resetting was not needed which would be a real bummer. I also appreciate that Garmin seems to be looking into it now.

  • I always Power-Off, never Sleep. I sometimes "short push" and it goes off directly. Sometimes "long push" and it asks.

I loaded the Beta 15.13 to see if the issue with Gradient was better. However it worked ok from the 1.11 to around the 8th or 9th with the Beta version. The problem only started a couple of days ago and this post is months old.

As an update to my post, it wouldn't start yesterday after I left it for an hour or so. I pushed the "Power" & "Start" together and it came on. The same just now, standard Start no good, even pushing 10+ secs. "Power" & "Start" ok.

I also noticed that I have had battery drain overnight - 80% down to 50%.

  • An update on this.

This morning normal power-on wouldn’t work, “Start” and “Power” together switched in on. However, battery down to 28% from yesterdays 51%. Device not used since yesterdays post when it was switched off immediately after checking it for the post.

Once initial power-on is done as above, it works normally with just the power button, it’s when you leave it for a period that the symptoms occur.

I have the feeling that the battery & power-on problems may be connected, no proof obviously.

  • Thank you for posting this procedure

  • I'm having the exact same issue. Edge 1040 is full charged but won't power on no matter what I do, then suddenly it powers on. I am wondering about the buttons on this device: I have the impression they all have two distinct pressure points (half and full). However, I cannot find anything about it in the manual. Buttons on previous models (e.g. Edge 1030) were different.
