Ride Sync over Bluetooth doesn’t work (eBike Data)

Hi,

I’ve got a problem with my new Edge 1040.

When I end and save a ride it doesn’t sync to Garmin Connect if I’m connected to the iPhone with Bluetooth. It works only with Wi-Fi and even in that case I have to force the synchronization.

The Edge connects fine with the iPhone and syncs everything except the rides!!!

I tried to reset the device but nothing has changed.

Does anyone have a solution or some suggestions to try?

It’s so frustrating…. and every time the same with new devices…

Thanks.
Federico

  • Same issue here. Did a ride on my Revolt E+. Everything synchs fine, apart for the ride I did. I can synch maps, screens and everything else. But ride I can only see on the head unit. Not in the connect app. Why can it be so easy on Wahoo, and such a hassle with Garmin?

I read all the replies and tried all what was suggested. What annoys me the most, is the lack of acknowledgment from Garmin. It’s the premium product in their bike line up, and such poor support.

  • It’s only e-bikes that are have  if this problem. If you do a normal ride with no ebike details syncing is not a problem.

I know it’s not acceptable but us e-bikes seem to be ignored.

  • That is absolute unacceptable .  Especially when the 1040 have a ton of e-bike features in the unit it self.

my question would then be how do I synch with a Mac then. I can’t do it now, won’t be home at the Mac before Sunday. Synching is so much easier on the wahoo. Soooo much easier.

  • This is the 1st garmin for over 10 years of use that I have had problems with.

the only way you will be able to sync is to reset the device, that works then without a Mac/pc but only works once for me the next ride won’t sync without a hardwire connection or a further reset!

  • I was just noticing that ebike rides are the only ones not syncing as well... road bike rides have been working fine for me, but the e-mtb rides are the ones not syncing. My wife has an Edge 530 and it syncs ebike rides perfectly. Just something on the 1040 that isn't working right.  Wahoo doesn't support Shimano e-steps data from ebikes or I would never have bought this Edge. The second they do support it I will be selling all Garmin products and going back to Wahoo. This is ridiculous.

  • It was not always broken. It was broken in some of the latest firmwares.
If you participate in the Beta-Program you could upvote my bug-report here and here to get more/any attention from Garmin....

  • I'd like to chime in here, also in hope that this gets some attention by Garmin.

For me, I have trouble syncing through both Bluetooth and Wifi - and this for indoor as well as outdoor (road / MTB) rides. (I don't have an e-bike, so I hereby confirm it is not linked to e-bikes only FWIW)

    What I've tried:

    • Repairing Edge to phone, following the procedure on the Garmin support website
    • Full Edge 1040 reset, including wipe of all data (I forgot to backup some saved courses, ... ) + repairing to phone
    • only Bluetooth enabled
    • only wifi enabled

    What works for me:

    • using a cable and Garmin Express always works
    • Recently I found out this works as well: Keep the power button of the Edge 1040 pressed down until it shuts down. Power on again, sync will work for me.. Need to repeat this procedure, or the sync will stop working.

These issues were introduced in a certain update, I remember in the beginning when I had the device, it was working correctly for me over Bluetooth. I'm using an  Android phone that is fully updated and have the latest Garmin Connect installed.

Please prioritize the fix of this basic functionality.

  • Also having this behaviour with an iPhone 12 Pro.
In fact, it will sync a some point, but it takes around 10 minutes (sometimes more) to sync a ride over Bluetooth with perfect 5G signal.
I don't know what it is transferring, but it very slow for a file of less than 1 MB.
Super fast over Wifi or USB with Garmin Connect.

  • I have not found that to be true for me. I have left my 1040 on with my phone nearby for over an hour, and it never sync'd the ride data over. For me the ebike rides are the ones not syncing right now. Road rides have been working lately.
Interestingly though, I'm now running the latest beta firmware and when I turn the ebike on and the Edge 1040 detects it as a sensor (it gets battery %, remaining range, and power assist mode) the Garmin immediately reboots. And goes into an endless reboot cycle as long as the ebike is on. It boots up, detects the ebike and reboots. If I turn the ebike off the Edge will be stable and stay on. I was able to resolve it by deleting the bike as a sensor and then re-add the bike back in and it seems to have fixed the reboot. Not sure if it fixes the sync or not, I'll test that this weekend. But they definitely seem to have done something specifically with the ebike portions of the code in this latest beta firmware.
