Strava Segments not syncing Edge 1040

I cannot get my Strava starred segments or courses  to sync on my Garmin Edge 1040 Solar.  I upgraded from a 530 to the 1040 Solar (had no issues with 530 and segments) and always see the same "Sign into your Strava account using your Garmin Connect account" via the segments widget. I am signed in and see "segments" widget on my web-based connect dashboard with my starred Strava segments. In the garmin connect app I see that segments are also enabled.  Anyone else have the same problem?

I have tried these things....

1. Disconnected Strava from Garmin and reconnected (on Strava's website)

2. Disconnected Garmin from Strava and reconnected (via Garmin connect profile)

3. Added new segments in Strava to hopefully force a sync (unsuccessful )

4. Tried syncs with Phone

5. Tried syncs via Garmin express via USB-C Connector.

  • Hmm... I have different experience.
I get warnings about SLS without navigation and without loaded course.
(on Edge 1040 and Quatix 6x)

  • Yeah, it's rather tricky / counter-intuitive, but:

    * if you're NOT following a course, you'll see the SLS notifications

    * if you ARE following a course, you'll see the SLS notification ONLY IF the course was created in / imported from Strava (i.e. if you created a course in Garmin itself or imported it from another tool like Komoot, you will NOT see the SLS notifications - this is b/c when you follow a course, in order to get SLS notifications, the segment information must be included in the course file itself and that happens only for the courses that you create in / import from Strava, but not other tools (as those, obviously, don't know anything about Strava segments))

  • ok- we are getting somewhere now- obviously the reason why so many differing opinions around the glove b/c depending on the rider and how they got or made the route that will tell what happens. My BIG question is, I'm a guy who never ever makes my own routes. I just get them posted from the ride leaders either as strava routes or RWGPS, I then D/L the .gpx file. (who knows where they got them or made them or in what program etc) too many variables to list.  Is there a way 1) that any route can be looked into by me first on the strava site to see if the live segments will show during the route 2) which type of file is best to use to have these SLS show up or does it not matter  - thanks

  • If it is as you wrote, that SLS works ONLY in correlation to the route created in Strava - this is some misunderstanding and logical error of the garmin programmers.
Wahoo identifies SLS by GPS coordinates and is not interested in whether you are following a route from Strava or generally a completely loose ride, or a route created in eg Koomot, RwGPS or more.

    regards

  • yes, that is why my friend who uses a Wahoo had it pop up on the same route as me and I have silence on my screen, always for every starred segment of all routes.

  • So I get this but I hate it.  The segment is a separate thing starred and saved via strava sync to my device.  You can see the segments via the segment explorer.  The map regardless of whether it was created and synced from Strava, RwGPS, Komoot or Garmin should be able to receive the overlayed data from the device since it's literally already there.  These things sync separately.  The route should not be the dependency ... the segment is the thing and if you are on a course with a segment overlapping there should be a notification regardless.

  • please email this to garmin

  • so this forum is just us chatting?

  • not sure but 100% they see it here  [email protected], maybe say it used to work and now in beta does not??

  • I’m not even on the beta.  This is release 12.16 for me
