Tip #3 - Workouts now support a secondary target

The 1040 now supports workouts that have a secondary target and will display that secondary target on the workout page.

Here the page is showing cadence as a secondary target.

If you are off the workout page you will get alerts about being outside of the primary target goals, but not the secondary goals.

  • Answer of TraininPeaks support:
thank you for your email. I am going to pass this to the team to look at and see if this is a limitation on our (no info) or Garmin.

in the meanwhile i found this on their site:
According to the support article, TrainingPeaks should not support Cadence Targets in .FIT:

    help.trainingpeaks.com/.../115000325647

That's stupid because I don't know what simple alternatives there are because I don't want to adjust every .FIT file manually?

otherwise then it is unfortunately a nice but useless feature Weary

looks like the same workout as .zwo export supports cadence target, so can i import .zwo workouts on Edge ?

So is this cadence target in .FIT a new feature, but nobody support it at the moment, same with workout converter of Zwift?

    whatsonzwift.com/.../workouts

  • The feature has been supported in FIT for several years, but was not surfaced on the Edge until recently.

  • answer of TP Support:

Thanks for sending this extra information over. I want to say the secondary targets with cadence will work when sending over to Zwift, so this may be a limitation on Garmin's end. Have you reached out to Garmin support as well? If not, I will to see if there is anything blocking the structure of the file to read. Also, I am not as familar with the new 1040 (I use a 530) and the workout screen on Garmin has default options and cannot be changed and I'm not sure if the new 1040 will support or show a secondary target range while on the workout screen. I will test this later if we get a 1040 test device in though!

So it works in Zwift because the .zwo File have this information, so can i use .zwo on Edge 1040 too?

i already gave TP Support the information i got from you!

  • thanks, i already tried it yesterday, but cadence information lost also here, think nobody support cadence as second target in .FIT because Garmin didn't support it before 1040 Rolling eyes

  • Maybe you use "Interval.icu"?
Perhaps synchronization with interval.icu -> GarminConnect carries an additional parameter (e.g. cadence, heart rate level, etc.).
How would I check, but the problem is that I only have the fourth day of the E1040 and I'm still "learning it" but at the moment I can't even start the training to see its screen.
I just have a training on the home page in E1040, there is its description, layout - when I select it and press "Start", the activity starts, but I do not have access to the training screen (although the screen in the profile is turned on).

  • I already have a training screen.
I took a training session on "interval.icu" with two parameters (power ramp and heart rate level as an additional one).
However, despite setting the parameter "Additional target" in two possible fields on the training screen, it displays only two dashes.
I will try and keep trying ;)

  • Wow so much hustle just for having cadence/target cadence as a usable field instead meaningless step distance. I think 80-90% peoples use training peaks for workouts…

Im lucky that I don’t do many workouts, but when I do, hole page makes no sense, I em waiting for Garmin to fix workout page.

  • What fix? To change it from the ground. :)Or something else?

i don't understand, there are some cadence drills that will improve something  , but cadence is more genetic and cannot be  improved

  • Co is right.
Depending on the training assumptions, there are situations where, apart from the power itself, it is necessary to maintain not only a specific cadence.

Quite often the second, very important parameter is the specific heart rate.

    @f|33tStA

I created a training on the "GC" site and set two targets for each block. The second required parameter is then displayed on the screen in the E1040:
