Faulty Features Removed
If it didn't work in the 1030 Plus etc, then the feature may well have been removed in the 1040 :-(
We already know about the Varia Vision, but they have also removed 3D Map Orientation - its no longer listed in the manual.

There is now only North Up or Track Up :-(

    It is odd that it is not listed in the manual, but on the device, 3D Orientation is available, and functions perfectly fine.

    Edit: I was still on the 10.6 firmware when I posted this…now on 12.11, it is gone.

    Are you on build 10.16 and have not yet updated to build 12.11?

    It didn't work reliably on the 1030 Plus. The road trace kept disappearing and then a diagonal black line would divide the screen. That would happen randomly but very often once per minute or so. I sent GArmin video and screen shots of it happening as have other users :-(

    Its not on my device with the 12.x firmware.

    It was removed in the 12.x build.

    I was. I did not realize was not on 12.11. Last night I received a notification about an update, and I accepted it…today, there is no more 3D orientation. I guess it is was removed on 12.11. It worked fine for me before, but now it is not available.

    It sure would be nice to have back. It is easier to read than a top down view that can get cluttered in urban areas.

    Did you ever use it on a 1030 Plus? For me the road trace kept vanishing every few minutes and often when that happened it was followed by a black diagonal line across the area view. I reported it back in October (a week after buying it new) last year. Garmin recently told me that there was unlikely to be a fix anytime soon. I then discovered from the manual that it was no longer mentioned for the 1040. I've managed to secure a refund from the shop I brought it from (I have all of the emails from Garmin about other features that won't be fixed). I'm going back to a Garmin 1000 and will wait to see what others bring out later this season. 

    After 10 years of Garmin Faults I've totally lost faith in the brand :-( I've been one of their biggest advocates in the past but I just can't any more. It's so sad.... but at the same time quite a relief after 8 months of promises from Garmin that have amounted to nothing.... They offered me 30% discount off a 1040 and we're seeing issues reported already :-( 

    I'm sorry to sound negative. I wish all Garmin customers good luck with their products :-)

    I used a 1030. I had a similar experience with 3D view, and it was annoying. But, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t a big enough deal for me to ditch the Garmin because I really bought it for the performance metrics which Wahoo and Hammerhead do not have. I’ll adapt to the “track up” view. I used it for a 150km route today, and it’s sufficient for what I need.
