1040 Availability

I'm spinning up a thread for users to share where the 1040 is available.  I haven't found any locally (major city).

I've ordered online today from 3 shops, each showed in stock at the time of payment.  When I called each store, I found that they did not have them in stock yet, and did not have a known date when they will have them.

  • MEC in Canada has around 39 units of the 1040

  • I'm holding out for working software to be available for the 1040 before I buy. Based on past experience (810, 1000, 1030) that should take 18-24 months. Well, probably longer.

I won't hold out that long. I am waiting for my buddy who owns a LBS to have them available from vendors of Garmin. Going through him, I get it wholesale, for just a little over $400.00. That said, I remember the 1040 having a ton of reported problems, and I had some minor issues and niggles, but overall love the unit to this day.

I have to wonder, regarding all the problems reported, how prevalent are they? It's so hard to tell what the statistical significance of the problems are because most people only post when they have problems, which is totally understandable, but it can often lead to unintentionally misrepresenting how bad the problems are for many or most users.

For your sensor connection issue, have you contacted Garmin tech support? They are usually pretty good, and I remember them being very helpful when I had some early problems with my Edge 1040, back like 8 years ago.

  • Last time I tried Garmin Support, their solution was for me to do a factory reset, which solved nothing, but caused me a lot of work to reconfigure all my profiles. If you look at the 1030 forum, there have been plenty of reports of sensor issues over the years. I think there is also a thread here on the 1040 forum alrready about those problems. I have no confidence that Garmin will ever make sensor connections reliable. It's been an issue for me with three devices so far. Looks like the 1040 may be plagued with it too.

Just because it all works for you doesn't mean there aren't legitimate issues/bugs. They may manifest for reasons (e.g. configuration/preferences, combination and types of paired sensors, etc) that aren't applicable to those not experiencing issues.

How prevelent those issues are is irrlevant. If it's a real issue/bug at all, and it affects me usinmg the device, it doesn't matter whether I fall into a 50 percentile of users or  0.5.

  • The main issue with the 1040 seems to be disconnections when using CIQ data fields.  Since these have, in general , not been updated for the 1040 hopefully that problem will go away when the updates happen.  For me, who doesn't use any CIQ data fields, I have about 20 hours of 1040 use without any sort of sensor problem (multiple power meters, HR, SRAM Etap, and Varia radar).  Your mileage may vary.

  • How prevelent those issues are is irrlevant.

No way. I get your point, but I also remember many, many times where there were buggy device releases, and all kinds of reported problems. Everything from the original XBox 360 RRoD issues, to various iterations of Playstations, graphics cards for PC's and on and on. While it SUCKS that some people were plagued with all these myriad of issues, the prevalence was so low that I was more than willing to take my chances.

On the other hand, there have been instances where products get released at launch that are so buggy and messy that the vast majority of customers were plagued with them. Cyberpunk 2077 comes to mind, as well as GTA's Trilogy: Definitive Edition.

So you can't just categorically say that the prevalence of bugs and problems in any product launch is exactly irrelevant. Maybe it is to you. Maybe a mere fraction of a percentage point of people who buy the 1040 experiencing issues is actually a deal breaker. If so, fair enough, I can respect that. But my position is that if the people experiencing these bugs and problems of varying severity is really, really low, then I will absolutely take my chances. But if huge numbers of people are reporting serious problems, then I would probably wait to purchase. Obviously, in a forum such as this, it could easily seem like everyone has problems, because a small handful of people are posting about their bugs; and if those problems are plaguing, say 25% of the people who buy the 1040, AND they are truly device-breaking issues, I would wait as well.

  • this thread is about 1040 availability

100% right! I can't speak for anyone else, lol but I forgot what thread I was posting in. :)

  • From what I am seeing thus far, it looks like the Solar model is a lot less scarce. So I suppose if the extra $150.00 isn't a deal breaker, it like people who don't want to wait for restocks can get at least their hands on them.

  • Interesting. They must have shipped less solar units to the UK (makes sense as it's never sunny). The solar sold out in under and hour everywhere and is stilL OOS here in the UK
