Initial observations

  • First, love the new mount! Metal! No more failures!

  • Do not like the cover for the USB-C port. Keep thinking I don't know the secret to opening it. More difficult than it should be.

  • Love USB-C, no more messing with plug orientationLike all other USB cables, some are power-only and Garmin of course requires a real all-function USB-C cable, so don't assume any USB-C cable will do more than charge it.

  • Touch screen is WONDERFUL, far more responsive

  • Comes pre-loaded with Euro and US map!

  • Screen is really sharp!!! Appears to be much higher res.

  • FAST! Playing with the map, changing orientation of unit immediately gets a response from the map. This thing appears to be a factor of 10 faster than the 1030.

  • Search tools- cool!!! Even a bathroom finder!!! And a bike shop finder! Unfortunately, the bike shop finder has way out-of-date info.

Did I mention how FAST it is?

Added: Make sure you download the latest firmware, just became available (or visible) as of this morning (6/8/22). Didn't show up until the unit was recognized by Garmin Express.

  • They have removed this feature, DC Rainmaker wrote about that in his article

  • Upgraded from 1030 to the non-slar 1040. Improvements noticed so far:

    • Display seems sharper
    • Both the unit and the touchscreen much more responsive
    • Ride time displayed in a half width field no longer leaves off the seconds after reaching 1 hour but puts the hour in a small number
    • Very fast to get a GPS fix
    • Grade seems to fluctuate less (but still unable to write to the fit file)

Apart from the need to get the CIQ apps made compatible so that I can use a 3rd party data field which writes grade to the fit file and Tempe Visualizer to report and record temperature, my key annoyance so far is that the minimum speed to end auto-pause is 6mph. This is missing several seconds of movement on any restart and, should I stop on a steep hill, could fail to record moving time until I reach the top. The minimum speed to end auto-pause on the 1030 was 3mph. Why double it, particular as the 1040 has a more accurate GPS system so less vulnerable to report false movement?
