Initial observations

First, love the new mount! Metal! No more failures!
Do not like the cover for the USB-C port. Keep thinking I don't know the secret to opening it. More difficult than it should be.
Love USB-C, no more messing with plug orientationLike all other USB cables, some are power-only and Garmin of course requires a real all-function USB-C cable, so don't assume any USB-C cable will do more than charge it.
Touch screen is WONDERFUL, far more responsive
Comes pre-loaded with Euro and US map!
Screen is really sharp!!! Appears to be much higher res.
FAST! Playing with the map, changing orientation of unit immediately gets a response from the map. This thing appears to be a factor of 10 faster than the 1030.
Search tools- cool!!! Even a bathroom finder!!! And a bike shop finder! Unfortunately, the bike shop finder has way out-of-date info.

Did I mention how FAST it is?

Added: Make sure you download the latest firmware, just became available (or visible) as of this morning (6/8/22). Didn't show up until the unit was recognized by Garmin Express.

Glad I didn't get the solar version. The only real benefit that would be of use to me, maybe, is the greater internal memory (64gigs vs 32). But as I suspected, the screen is a bit darker, probably less contrast, due to the solar overlay. And besides, battery life on the new standard one looks wonderful! So I get the solar from the geek part of me, but I really do want the best-possible screen.

But they are not independent! Suppose I want more memory to put more customized maps on, then I am convicted to solar (which is ridiculous anyway).

Realistically, it's not going to be easy to come close to filling 32g for most, let alone 64. At some point perhaps we'll see a unit that could use a LOT of memory, because it's offloading from gadgets like the Varia 715, but that's going to take more processing power that the 1040 has. At 32g you could do a full summer ride throughout Europe, then spend the fall in the US, and have enough room for all maps needed and store every single ride. So, for now, what do we need the memory for?

Just wish I could find the standard 1040 now instead of 5-8 weeks from now that the website is stating.

Check your local bike shop. We ordered them a month ago, non-Solar only. Where are you located? Sorry we don't ship product ourselves.

Since you got one, can you test two things:

Is it finally possible to send new routes while an anctivity is recorded?
Biggest minus in the current Garmin LineUp.
Can we run CommectIQ Apps while an activity is recorded (paused), for example Komoot to load a new route?
