Installation Instructions

  1. Connect your Edge 1030 device to your computer using the micro-USB cable.
  2. Download and unzip Edge1030_1119Beta.zip and place the GUPDATE.gcd file in the \Garmin folder of your device's internal storage drive.
  3. Disconnect your device from the computer, approve the update on the Edge, and wait for the update to finish.
  4. If you would like to revert to the last public release software, follow the above steps but place the GUPDATE_1119.GCD file in the \Garmin folder. Rename the file to GUPDATE.GCD before disconnecting your device.
NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.
  • Usually Beta are for the mainstream devices. APAC and rebranded devices are excluded unless explicitly stated otherwise. Before release they will putin the special sauces fo those devices with the modified fw and release to those as well. I would not get into beta if I didn't have a mainstream device. It may install but you may mess your device and have to factory reset it.

  • Alors le retour ! Cette mise à jour bien ? Pas de Beug ? Pas de problème ?

  • I am experiencing a problem when loading saved courses, which didn't appear until installation of this beta version - I have reported, but would like to hear if others experience this and/or there is a workaround.

I can repeat the following with the same result each time and it is regardless of whether the course has worked pre-beta installation or not:

    • Navigation / Courses / Saved Courses / select course - the course loads without problems
    • I press "Ride" and regardless of whether I select "Navigate to the beginning of the course?" or not the device turns off when it shows approx. 8% of the course is loaded (top left hand corner of the display)
    • A short press of the power button and the device restarts, i.e. in a similar fashion as if the unit had been powered down completely.
    • Once the unit is powered up again sometimes the course has loaded and all is good, other times I have to go through he course selection process again and then i end up in the same predicament as before because chances are the unit will power down again this cycle repeats until I hit lucky and the unit stays powered on and the course is  "active" - once past this stage everything is working as normal.

I have tried deleting all courses and reloading only a single course that I know worked previously

I have also reset my device (full reset) and the problem still exists (with the beta version).

  • I can confirm that crash happens around 8% route calculation. Rolling back to earlier version.

  • Thanks for letting me know. Now I know it’s not just me :-)

  • If that is the case you can also turn off TBT navigation and Off Course Alerts. When you do that no calculation is needed so it should not crash. You will still get the magenta line on the map and can follow the course, it is just the turn prompts that you will not get. Personally that is how I used the Edge most of the time anyway, and I just look at the map if I am not sure what turn to take. That would save you rolling back FW and loosing your settings. You then just wait for the official release.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Your solution is a no go for me as I normally wear glasses, but don’t when I ride so I can not see that much detail on the display whilst riding. But thanks again for the suggestion.

  • How does automatic course route caching work?

  • How does automatic course route caching work?

Courses loaded onto Garmins are just a series of coordinates (tens, hundreds or thousands depending on the platform used) known as course points. Every time you select a course and hit Ride the Garmin 'dynamically' calculates your route (for TBT nav) by comparing these course points to the routable map you have on the device - depending on length and complexity this can take seconds / few minutes / longer. Thing is, despite this being a dynamic calculation, unless you either a) modify the course or b) update the map, the calculated route is always going to be identical.

Educated guess: after calculating the route for a given course the first time, this route information is then stored alongside the course file so it's immediately available next time the course is selected and without having to recalculate.

As well as an obvious efficiency improvement for those riding the same course multiple times, I hope this feature helps with two other semi-related longstanding bugs:

    1) Edge 1030 sometimes crashes/resets while calculating a long route for the first time (used to be around 1 in 5, now more like 1 in 10) = because of this I've gotten into a habit of loading up a course once on the device, attempting to calculate it, if it crashes then trying the same thing again (99% then works) so come the day of the ride I can select/use the route with confidence.. however still have to wait while the Garmin recalculates it for the 2nd or 3rd time.

    2) Map display fails to update your current position while riding along AND a route is being calculated - often the case for the first 5 minutes or so of my rides = if you've had the opportunity to pre-calculate and cache this becomes less of an issue.

  • Educated guess: after calculating the route for a given course the first time, this route information is then stored alongside the course file

"Chach files" of successfully calculated courses are stored in folder  \Garmin\Calcs  as  *Name*_course.cal   files.
