Pausing during FTP calculation

It seems that you cannot pause your ride during a 20 minute effort and expect the FTP to be calculated correctly. A continuous 20 minute effort is easy (well, not easy, exactly) if you are cycling indoors. Unfortunately, for those of us that do most of our workouts outdoors, it is very hard to find a single uninterrupted 20 minute stretch of road or trail. In the real world, there are intersections and/or places where you have to turn around. It would be nice to be able to pause while you momentarily have to stop, so that your average power is not ruined. I do realize that some people would consider a stop like this to be a "cheat", in that you are getting a rest, so it is not a true 20-minute effort. However, this is really a pretty negligible rest and should be the call of the user. I guess my question is this - does anyone know of a way to pause during an FTP effort and still get the calculation for the 20 minute segment?

  • No, I don't think so - and for exactly the reasons you've stated - it would be inaccurate. Even a stop for maybe 10 seconds at a junction will have a significant effect on things like your HR (e.g. look at a ride on Garmin Connect where you've paused recording at junctions, from looking at the HR graph you can see where all the junctions were). And your average power is not 'ruined' if you keep recording during stops, it's correct as far as FTP calculations are concerned. I'd turn your question around; if you consider these short rests negligible but the FTP test doesn't, why not just leave the 1030 recording for the whole test?
