Updates to fix Some 1030 Plus problems unlikely :-( ?

I brought a brand new 1030 Plus last October and sadly within the first week I was reporting problems.

Mainly it does what it should, but within a week of getting it last October, I discovered that it didn’t fully support my Varia Vision ( they said it did) . The 3D Map Orientation view keeps loosing the road display and generally breaking up. The temperature is 7F high (proved in calibration lab at work), since recent updates it has updated my FTP  twice to about 800 (I wish).  Also it sometimes refuses (since recent updates) to connect to my Stages Power Meter at the start of ride and if I stop (say) to wait for friends it looses it again. I have a Varia Radar and the Edge is supposed to go to sleep (if selected in settings) after a short period of inactivity an put Ant sensors to sleep (so that the radar goes to sleep) it doesn’t so I have to put the Edge to sleep manually. There’s other things I can’t remember too. Garmin have kept me hanging on all of this time but now say these faults are unlikely to be resolved any time soon for 1030 Plus. They won’t warranty exchange up to the 1040, but have offered me a 30% discount off the 1040 (I've declined). I'm not sure I would be any better off with the 1040 as that has now dropped the Varia Vision completely as well as the 3D Map Orientation view. I paid £550 for their flagship device expecting it to do what it says in the manual.

I’ve been a Garmin advocate for 10 years, but enough is enough. I'm not prepared to keep paying out for devices that don't do what they should. I'm not known for 'spitting my dummy' and have longed to be able to say that Garmin have now stepped up to the mark and done the best thing for their customers over this - I would be the first to sing their praises if they had! Not enough credit is given when things go right.

I'm lucky as I brought the Edge 1030 Plus (my 4th since the Edge 800) from a really friendly Local bike shop that I've been using for years - they are going to refund the full price and sell it off at a loss elsewhere. Had I brought it from Garmin I would have no recourse other than to put up with t he 1030 Plus faults or pay more to 'Upgrade' to the 1040.

I have a whole collection of Garmin Devices: Radar RTL 515 , Varia Vision HUD, Virb Elite Camera, Vivoactive 4 watch then 2 HR belts and sensors for 3 bikes. I had a Garmin Tacx Flux S, but that went back after developing problems too :-( .

I can only imagine that the original developers of features like the 3D Map Orientation and the Varia Vision are no longer available to bring these items in line with the current generation of Edge devices. The alternative to that is that they don't give a ******

As a long time customer I feel completely let down :-( The responses from the support team have ALWAYS been polite and helpful but the end result has never been delivered.

The grass may not be greener on the other side (whichever platform I ultimately decide to jump to) but I hope that it will smell a lot sweeter :-)

Thanks for the good times Garmin - it's so sad that for me they have come to an end.

To EVERYONE that uses Garmin Devices of any sort in any application - stay safe and enjoy the new developments that are sure to be added by Garmin in the future (while leaving some important features behind) :-)

  • I can well understand you, but as you say: the grass may not be greener over there.
I'll put it this way: the grass here isn't perfectly green, but it's greener than over there.

  • I hear you :-) I think will be going back to a Garmin 1000 in the short term - it just worked. Then I'll see what others bring out later in the year :-)

  • I hate to say it, but FWIW, the wife and I have had the following Garmins: 520, 530 Edge, 830 Edge, and 2 x 1030 Edge+.  All of our Garmins have had issues ranging from connected devices dropping out to full out lock ups of the GPS.  Many of these issues come after you buy the unit and Garmin later rolls out an update so your kinda stuck.  But all of our Garmins seemed to work good for about 3-9 mos.  We also have the Bolt & Roam from Wahoo that we've had since they were first rolled out and we've never had any issues with either despite a crazy amount of updates.  I've started telling fellow riders if they want bells, whistles, and headaches; then buy a Garmin.  But if you want something simple that always seems to just work; I've had nothing but good luck with Wahoo.  I can honestly say that after the issues we have been having with our 1030s that we are done with Garmin.

  • Thanks for this empathetic reply 5772203 :-)

Garmin need to take a big step back and look at themselves and their deteriorating reputation. They had the benefit of a lack of competition for many years but that is diminishing quickly. You only have to look at the handlebars on an average club ride to see the evidence of that. I now see about 55% Garmin and 45% other ' What would you buy says the new guy - once the answer was exclusively Garmin and with good reason (up until the 1030) Now it's as you suggest - the answer needs a caveat to go with it. They need to (for the first time ever perhaps) actually engage with their customers. Admit to faults and then put them right - better still have a robust Beta team and don't release anything until it's fit for purpose at all levels.

Then there's the warranty - this is the response I got when enquiring about the Edge 1040 as a suitable warranty upgrade to my 1030 Plus (8 months old). Remember that the issues on the 1030 Plus are unlikely to be fixed, so a like for like warranty replacement of the 1030 Plus would be pointless...: (italics are my words)

I was told on Wednesday 8th June:

"I think that I'm going to look at the Edge 1040 option for you because I'm going to be honest and say that fixes for the issues you have reported are more than likely not going to come out any time soon."

Then the next day it changed to:

"What I can offer here as a goodwill gesture is our Trade in Trade up service where you return the Edge 1030 Plus and in return we'll send you a brand new Edge 1040 at a 30% discounted price." That hardly seems fair or in no way could be described as a warranty resolution

"When it comes to the issues you've reported we haven't had any information on that for the Edge 1040 however we're going to do some internal testing for this and will let you know how we get on ourselves - here's what we have so far:

    • The Edge 1040's temperature compared with a Tempe's temperature are identical, so so far we can't see that issue being replicated but this isn't a guarantee that it'll never get replicated. So it looks as though the temperature issues MAY have been resolved
    • Also regarding the Auto Sleep issue we're now thinking that it may something that's set n place by design, at least when Auto Sleep is enabled; it's to prevent the device from going asleep "by accident" (e.g. if riders are maybe stuck at a prolonged red light or a similar situations, or if Auto Pause for whatever reason accidentally kicks in during the ride).  This is what we're thinking is going to be the same for the Edge 1040 as well - but we'll do some further testing and let you know; then we can probably come to the same conclusion about the Edge 1030 Plus' behaviour with Auto Sleep. The manual says: "You can use the Auto Sleep feature to automatically enter sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. During sleep mode, the screen is turned off and the ANT+ sensors, Bluetooth, and GPS are disabled. Wi‑Fi continues to run while the device is asleep."  To me and most others that indicates it would be during an activity and not while sat on the desk idle!
    • Regarding the 3D Mapping that option has actually not been included on the 1040; we do not have any information currently whether this is at any point in the future going to come back or be looked at in anyway for the Edge 1040 so that's all I can provide for now.

So there you have it, no fix, no exchange = no good. As I say - I'm lucky and the Local Bike Shop I got it from are going to refund in full .If I'd got it from Garmin I'd be stuck with no way forwards :-( . So I've spent 8 months reporting issues and waiting for replies to get absolutely nowhere.

What more can I say - I'm incredibly sad, not cross - 'how the mighty are fallen' seems appropriate for Garmins Current state... Please someone take them by the throat and give them a good shake - wake them up and steer them back on the course towards reliability and let them re earn their reputation - Please.......

It's far too late for me....

  • Im warming to the idea of a class action lawsuit
