I brought a brand new 1030 Plus last October and sadly within the first week I was reporting problems.
Mainly it does what it should, but within a week of getting it last October, I discovered that it didn’t fully support my Varia Vision ( they said it did) . The 3D Map Orientation view keeps loosing the road display and generally breaking up. The temperature is 7F high (proved in calibration lab at work), since recent updates it has updated my FTP twice to about 800 (I wish). Also it sometimes refuses (since recent updates) to connect to my Stages Power Meter at the start of ride and if I stop (say) to wait for friends it looses it again. I have a Varia Radar and the Edge is supposed to go to sleep (if selected in settings) after a short period of inactivity an put Ant sensors to sleep (so that the radar goes to sleep) it doesn’t so I have to put the Edge to sleep manually. There’s other things I can’t remember too. Garmin have kept me hanging on all of this time but now say these faults are unlikely to be resolved any time soon for 1030 Plus. They won’t warranty exchange up to the 1040, but have offered me a 30% discount off the 1040 (I've declined). I'm not sure I would be any better off with the 1040 as that has now dropped the Varia Vision completely as well as the 3D Map Orientation view. I paid £550 for their flagship device expecting it to do what it says in the manual.
I’ve been a Garmin advocate for 10 years, but enough is enough. I'm not prepared to keep paying out for devices that don't do what they should. I'm not known for 'spitting my dummy' and have longed to be able to say that Garmin have now stepped up to the mark and done the best thing for their customers over this - I would be the first to sing their praises if they had! Not enough credit is given when things go right.
I'm lucky as I brought the Edge 1030 Plus (my 4th since the Edge 800) from a really friendly Local bike shop that I've been using for years - they are going to refund the full price and sell it off at a loss elsewhere. Had I brought it from Garmin I would have no recourse other than to put up with t he 1030 Plus faults or pay more to 'Upgrade' to the 1040.
I have a whole collection of Garmin Devices: Radar RTL 515 , Varia Vision HUD, Virb Elite Camera, Vivoactive 4 watch then 2 HR belts and sensors for 3 bikes. I had a Garmin Tacx Flux S, but that went back after developing problems too :-( .
I can only imagine that the original developers of features like the 3D Map Orientation and the Varia Vision are no longer available to bring these items in line with the current generation of Edge devices. The alternative to that is that they don't give a ******
As a long time customer I feel completely let down :-( The responses from the support team have ALWAYS been polite and helpful but the end result has never been delivered.
The grass may not be greener on the other side (whichever platform I ultimately decide to jump to) but I hope that it will smell a lot sweeter :-)
Thanks for the good times Garmin - it's so sad that for me they have come to an end.
To EVERYONE that uses Garmin Devices of any sort in any application - stay safe and enjoy the new developments that are sure to be added by Garmin in the future (while leaving some important features behind) :-)
