How should I prepare for getting a replacement unit?

I had a crash on June 7, the day before the 1040 announcement.  I had my 1030 Plus tethered, so it didn't go far, but the out front mount broke, and the case of the 1030 Plus was cracked open near where the tether connects.  (The unit is still working, but obviously, the case wouldn't be weather proof any more.)

Garmin Support arranged for me to get a replacement unit on an exchange basis.

Do I just need to sync my current unit to Garmin Express, and use that to set up the replacement, or should I try to do a "full backup" to my computer hard drive?

  • Try this :-) . There is an option to pay up front and have the replacement delivered while you still have the broken one.  It's called the 'Immediate Ship Option' You would pay FULL price at that point. You then sit the units side by side and they are able to transfer the settings automatically. You then send the broken one back and Garmin refund you the balance between the agreed price and the full price.  Alternatively follow this link :-) I hope that helps!

Can I Back up My Information and Settings on My Garmin Device?

  • Thanks for the reply!

I'm using the option you mention, and the replacement unit has already shipped, according to an email I received.

I have never had much luck with "Device Transfer".  On occasion, I have had more than one top of the range Edge in my possession, such as the 1030 and 1030 Plus, and the units would seldom "find" each other.  I had kind of forgotten the feature (until I read on DC Rainmaker that the feature was dropped from the Edge 1040).  But I can certainly try it when the replacement arrives...

I have done a sync in Garmin Express, and I have copied the entire contents of the Garmin folder from the 1030 Plus to my hard drive.  So, I hope I've done enough to transfer my settings to the replacement device.  I looked at the link you provided, and I think it does about the same thing as my backup, only with more intervention required.

I also ordered a 1040, before reading the DC Rainmaker review, where I found out the 1040 uses a different mount, making the mounts on my three bikes obsolete.  I'll be able to play around with information transfer to that one when it arrives.  Maybe I'll just put it on the new frame I have had on order for close to eight months.

  • It doesn't use a different mount :-) The mount is just made of metal now and not plastic :-)

  • I had to go back and look at the DC Rainmaker review again.  Somehow, I thought the mount was a different shape!

My 1030 Plus ripped out of the out-front mount, and took pieces of plastic along with it, so I'm certain the metal insert will do an even better job of destroying mounts!

    Thanks for setting me straight.
