Edge 1030+ frequently losing GPS firmware (FW version on 0.0.0)

I wonder if I'm the only one experiencing this problem?

I often use my Edge 1030+ for commuting and I'm using wandrer.earth so often I follow a previously downloaded course. After the first ~25km to work I pause the Edge and use "Power down". Than after maybe 9 hours of work I (try to) resume the activity for cycling home.

Most times this works flawlessly but 5 time in the past 7 month the 1030+ was not able to acquire satellites within 15 minutes after trying to resume the activity :( It displayed "acquiring satellites" forever!

Interestingly I found out, that in this case
"System>About>Copyright Info" shows GPS FW version as 0.0.0!!!!
See my screen shot!

Turning on and off (several times) in the field did not help. The only way to recover from this was connecting Garmin Express at home.

Than after the next power-up I get "Updating the GPS firmware" ... and System>About>Copyright Info is back on GPS Version 4.80.

Because I dislike being out in the woods without a working navigation (not to talk about the missing Strava kilometers ;) ) I yesterday tried a second option while again faced with the GPS FW 0.0.0 problem:

I connected my Android phone using a USB OTG cable, which I put into my frame bag after the last FW 0.0.0 incident, and restored a previously saved copy of 006B310706.GCD to the RemoteSW folder an the Edge 1030+ and voilà, after the next power-up I again saw "Updating the GPS firmware" ... and "System>About>Copyright Info" is back on GPS Version 4.80.

@Garmin if you need any of the debug files from my Edge device to look after this issue, please contact me!

  • Just a thought…
If the GPS file in Remote folder sometimes has vanished - maybe the filesystem on your Edge went corrupt.
I had a similar problem with some IQ setup files.

What I did: run CHKDSK X: /f if you are on Win PC.

  • Thank you for that interesting idea. Just tried it. chkdsk reported "No problems detected".

  • BTW, I'm not sure, but it might be the other way round: The Edge 1030 should not have that 006B310706.GCD file loitering around in RemoteSW. But GarminExpress and/or the GarminConnect App on my phone stores it there over and over again. Than, sometimes the Edge sees a new GPS update, but updating GPS FW 4.80 with GPS FW 4.80 fails and I end up with a broken GPS FW on version 0.00. Just a theory ;)

Is anybody willing to check the content of RemoteSW for the presence of 006B310706.GCD on his Edge 1030+  ???

  • In my RemoteSW:

    006B310706.GCD
    CPE.BIN

  • Only have CPE.BIN on my device.

  • I would recommend connecting your Edge to your computer, completely deleting the RemoteSW folder, then disconnecting and powering back on. This will recreate a new copy of that folder.

Also, before syncing again, I would recommend clearing your sync queue in Connect. This is likely not the cause but it's best to start from scratch. Instructions on clearing the queue here

  • Hello everybody, thanks for your support.

As recommended by Garmin-Blake I deleted RemoteSW and in parallel cleared the sync queue.

Than, day #1 of a bike packing tour, the Edge 1030+ was fine. 255km and only a single "radar disconnect" event. No navigation or GPS issues. Great!

At the end of day #1, I used the GarminConnect app on my smartphone to synchronize via Bluetooth.

Day #2, started with "Acquiring Satellites" forever. GPS firmware again was on version 0.00 :(

So, deleting 006B310706.GCD in RemoteSW out in the fields via USB-OTG from my smartphone, placing a fresh copy of 006B310706.GCD, powercycle, "updating GPS firmware" ... All seems fine, but now I got "Lost satellites" + "Acquiring satellites" + "Ready" (mostly after some seconds) every few minutes for the whole ride on day #2 (80km) and day #3 (90km).

Believe me, you don't have much fun to navigate along a given track with countless turns while bothered with all that GPS-lost events :(

I attached a screenshot from Garmin Connect where you can see each GPS-lost-event. Recorded by the "Battery, GPS, Pause"-datafield by Balto.

BTW, I remember I already experienced the same problem on a 130km ride June 2021.

Any suggestion, how to fix this?
    I'm starting to hate my 1030 ;)

  • Addendum:

Err_log.txt from sync at end of day #1

There also seems to be a "nice" coredump: in  .System\Diag\0917_200410_coredump.zip

In June "GPS lost" started around kilometer 60 within the ride:

  • Unfortunately it happened again :(

Commuting to work, pressed pause, power down.
Than after power-up for driving home: No satellite fix and the GPS firmware is back on 0.00 :(

This time there definitely was an active navigation while powering down. Maybe that is an issue!?

    Argh ...
Saved the activity, connected my Android smartphone via USB OTG, placed a copy of 006B310706.GCD to RemoteSW, power-cycled. The display now showed a "Updating GPS firmware" progress indicator.
Again connecting the phone, deleted the RemoteSW folder, deleted Device.fit and GarminDevice.XML (that seems to help to prevent the repeated "Lost satellites"-problem every few minutes, after recovering the GPS firmware). All fine again.

Currently I'm afraid of using my Edge 1030+ for any serious / multi-day bike packing events with all that problems :(

I already thought about a factory reset. But it's a lot of work to reconfigure all my settings, pages, data fields, sensors, etc.

  • Based on the symptoms you are seeing again and again, plus what you have already tried, the next step would be to explore replacement options.
