Can't start activity when course is loaded first

Anyone experiancing following issue with 4.0 verions?

1.Turn on Garmin,

2. Select Course,

3. hit Ride

When pressing Start activity nothing happens (no reaction on the button), also when I set auto start activity is not started.

You are not able even to quit from the activity - can't restart Garmin. Only holding powerbutton for 30 sec works.

As a workaround I first start activity and then load course but recalculation takes agers now (44km route). During calculation the GPS pointer stuck on the map.

  • No problem here (v4.0):

-Turn on Garmin - wait for a satfix
    -Navigation, courses, load course
-Message: „you are at the beginning of the course - will you start?“
-„Yes“ - and off you go!

  • but at this point you did not start any activity , you just load the course and navigate to start :)

  • I start the navigation (and activity) that way - track navigation - no turn guidance.
„Yes“ starts the activity. Timer runs.
No „navigation to start“ needed - I‘m on the beginning of the course!

With turn guidance enabled I do it the same way:

Turn on Garmin - wait for a satfix
    -Navigation, courses, load course, Go
-Message: „you are at the beginning of the course - will you start?“
-„Yes“ (timer starts) - but this time I have to wait until calculation is 100% (completed) - in my case Autopause kicks in. Then: off you go!

(for both navigation modes: if you are not at the beginning of the course, a different message appears: „Do you want navigation to the start point?“)

  • Happened again today, so 3rd day and same issue. Does not metter if route is started from saved courses, komoot or stracva. Got video - will upload later.

  • A video of this issue would be very helpful, if you are still okay with sharing that of course.

  • It's related to https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/209907/how-to-stop-a-connect-iq-activity

If i start routing from Strava or Komot, activity is recorded but I can't stop it and save. I can't shoutdown or restart garmin becase message says " Connect IQ app is open" - how to close it?

Do you already have the solution? i'm having the same problem.

I use komoot to navigate, when i start a route and want to hit the start/stop button nothing happens. So i can't start or stop a activity.

(yes you can hit: -„you are at the beginning of the course - will you start?“ ) but thats just a work around!

@Garmin do you have a solution for this problem????

  • You do not even have to start course to have start/stop not activating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_blZBvPwhI

  • I have just encountered the same issue, but using the IQ App RouteCourse. Preparing for my second ride with the 1030 Plus (replacing a 1000), but first using a planned route I thought I would test that it works in the calm of the evening before riding. Good thing, not the sort of issue you want to troubleshoot on the roadside. I crashed out by holding the on/off button until it rebooted.

Like the other examples above it seems to be related to using apps that allow you to download a course and then launch the navigation from within the app using a single (onscreen) button push.

It seems that launching the navigation doesn't kill the app and pass overall control back to the main function, as it does on the 1000 (for instance). And that then causes a conflict if trying to either start recording a ride, or turning the unit off.

RouteCourse allows a download only option, so using another course, I downloaded, exited the app and IQ, and then launched the navigation from the main menu. No problem either starting to record a ride or turning the unit off after launching navigation.

My conclusion, it isn't as the thread heading says "Can't start activity when course is loaded first", but launching navigation within an IQ App causes unresolvable conflict.

This won't entirely help zeair because the Strava app only seems to allow a combined download and launch button, and not a download only option.

  • Concur ... just used komoot iq app on a short ride and a) had to stop the current activity to select the iq app route then chose the route in the komoot app.  Tried to start and absolutely no joy. Downloaded the route as a gpx into ridewithgps which is linked to my garmin account and used the navigation from the home screen ... same route but perfect recording and edge functionality.

Definitely pointing at the iq app navigation integration as being at fault.
