Edge 1030 Plus Restart During Activity

I've been using my new 1030 Plus for 1 month, firmware is updated to the last official release (not beta), everything is ok but ... it happened twice during my longest acitvities (5 hours) that the 1030+ restarted.

After the restart I was able to press the start button and resume the activity without loosing data (only 40-50 seconds of data were lost while the device was restarting) but all the following metrics were lost:

  • training status
  • training effect
  • heat acclimation
  • recovery time

In particular, heat acclimation is not working anymore for all the activities I'm recording after the restart. Recovery time restarted from 0. All the other metrics are now working ok.

Two questions:

  • is this a known bug?
  • how can I make Heat acclamation work correctly again?
  • If restarts are frequent it's likely a physical defect, probably some slightly skewed internal connector or something like that. Ask support for a solution.

Recovery and heat acclimation sound like that kind of bug that would be unlikely to get discovered and fixed if it only happens after a forced restart. Because forced restarts are so rare.

  • Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunatley, in my case, I do not use Strava live segments, so the problem I experienced this past weekend appears to be different.  I have only experienced two reboots of my 1030 Plus since i got it about a year and a half ago.  The first reboot was not even that long of a ride--maybe about 4-5 hours.

  • I had the same incident for the first time on 14th July 2022 and again today, 21st July 2022.

The person I spoke to at Garmin said they had non-known issues of this type of occurrence!!!

Do I continue to bother or even trust Garmin Support?!

  • This has happened to me, typically on a long training ride.  Had this issue twice yesterday on a 180km ride. Once it came back it took 5+ minutes to find satellites and start recording my distance and speed. Very frustrating.  Any suggestions how to fix this?  Does the device need to be reset?

  • I fixed it by getting a full refund from my local store, then buying a Wahoo ROAM.

  • This happened to me at least three times on a 600km 37 hour Randonneur ride.  My two ridemates also use the 1030 Plus; one had at least two reboots, and one had at least one reboot.  One of their reboots happened literally within 5km of where my unit rebooted, the coincidence of which is too much to ignore.

Unfortunately, it was a formal ride where our logs are required to prove we did the ride.  Resorted to using Gotoes Strava tools to combine all three logs to make one golden ride report but at the end of the day, I simply didn't have telemetry (HR, power, etc) for over half of my freakin' ride.

It was profoundly frustrating.  What should have been my most glorious ride of my life so far was marred by missing all the vital details I depend on to gauge my performance.  Average power of 44 Watts indeed!

  • Sorry to hear about your 1030 Plus reboots, my buddy had a 1030 model and it simply turned the power off randomly during a ride, but didn't reboot. So yeah, there's certainly a huge reliability issue with some Garmin bike computers. I love the huge display and features of the 1030 Plus, but will not tolerate flaky operation. Both my Wahoo ELEMNT and ROAM computers have been rock solid, never a glitch, so that's why I went back to Wahoo.
