gradient lag 1030plus

My new 1030plus is reporting the gradient changes with an annoying delay (more than 4 seconds). When it says i'm ascending i'm already up and when it finally says i'm descending i'm already a few hundred meters on zero gradient.

My 820 did not have this issue... Will this be fixed?!

Kind regards.

R.

  • Interesting, wonder how GoPro are stabilising the horizon on the Hero 9 as that would have similar challenges. I thought that was with the accelerometer, but maybe they're using video processing as well.

  • Here is Garmin response,

    Dear,

We inform you that we have taken your request into account.

In order to solve your problem, please follow the following instructions:

Turn off the GPS (if you haven't already),
Hold down the 2 buttons on the front of the screen "LAP" and "Start / Stop",
Press the power button while keeping the two buttons pressed "LAP" and "Start / Stop",
Between two and five seconds later, the GARMIN logo should appear,
When the GARMIN logo disappears, you can let go of the buttons.

The GPS will restart and it will be necessary to connect it to GarminExpress on your computer to reinstall the latest update.

    I did not test.

  • My  reply  from Garmin which  seems  pointless

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Australasia,

Please provide a short video of the issue so we can provide feedback for our development team.

If you have any further questions at all then please feel free to contact us on 1800 235 822 EST (Australia), 0800 427 652 (New Zealand) 8:30am-5pm (Mon-Fri). "

  • They are assuming you haven’t updated your GPS chipset to 4.50!? Doesn’t make the slightest difference to the problem.

  • I still have the same problem, I see the gradient at least 15 seconds late. I have contacted the assistance several times, but I have never been given a solution. Did you solve this?

  • Nope. Still same problem . So annoying

  • Yes I have the same issue I could be wrong but I think it was ok  before V3 firmware.

  • OK, but they should be solved by software update. I have also been replaced by the device, but I still have the same problem. Is it possible that garmin will fail to correct a mistake that I have never had with old and cheaper devices (garmin edge 810 and edge 500)?

  • This is not a new or isolated issue. I flagged this with others almost 3 years ago with the original 1030. Garmin had no answer then and they seemingly have no answer (or knowledge of it...) now - the problem has never gone away in all that time. To be honest it's probably worse - sometimes gradient switches to negative when I'm climbing 10%+ hills for no reason. It's hard to trust the accuracy any more.

And to those who say "why does it matter? Just look around you instead" or whatever, people like myself ride a lot of steep hills, and knowing the gradient is important for gauging effort, if not for the morbid curiosity of knowing how steep the thing you're riding up is.

I was contemplating "upgrading" to the plus model but it's disheartening to hear nothing has changed here, as well as the new issue with IQ route-loading rendering units unable to start activities. But what's new in the world of Garmin anyway?

  • don't take the 1030 plus, it has the exact same problem and it's really frustrating. How is it possible that a company like garmin cannot solve this problem? should we switch to bryton?
