Accurate Time on Display

Hi all,

I am considering buying Garmin as my first smartwatch and I am looking forward to all things I am going to be able to do with it.

Out of all models available, I am almost settled on Tactix (I also considered Fenix, Epix and Enduro).

However, I have an obsession with accurate time and I want always my watch to show the time on the display up to less than ¼ s, which my previous watches (mostly radio-controlled but sometimes also GPS-synced digital watches) have been able to do.

I understand there can be several factors causing an inaccuracy of the time being displayed, starting with the syncing method, to how busy the processor is at the moment, up to the delay of the display.

What should I do to minimise the inaccuracy and to have the time displayed on the watch as accurate as possible, do you have any advice as to which model it would be advisable to choose and what results am I likely going to achieve?

These are my ideas so far:

  • I need to sync the time directly with GPS often enough
  • AMOLED display is preferrable to MIP
  • I should probably have one less busy, "purely timekeeping" screen but I'm not sure whether an analogue second hand or seconds in digits would be more reliable

Thanks for any advice/ideas!

The best you are going to see, with any Garmin watch, is a displayed time accurate to at best about +/- 1.5 seconds.

Unlike a "normal" quartz watch, Garmin sport watches do not have an onboard quartz crystal oscillator that can be referenced for time display.  As a result, between syncs to GPS or a 'phone, the displayed time will drift to a greater or lesser degree dependent on processing load for other activities.  In fact, the displayed time, even immediately after a sync, will still be about +/- 1.5 seconds at best.
