I have not looked at Garmin's business plan for this, but do believe that if they are going to monetize the platform, or even extra features within it with a subscription fee, there should be 1-2 years free with a purchase of a (new) watch. At the very least.
This is standard elsewhere. I bought a new car recently and was given 2 years for free with a navigation system and satellite radio. Buying used woud not have granted me those paid features for free.
Totally agree, especially with so-called premium watches.
