HRM broadcast to Edge 830 - lagging?

Hi,

When I do my bike workouts, I broadcast the HR from the watch (Marq Golfer gen 2) to either Taxc Training app or Edge 830 depending on the type of activity. To me it looks like the HR is lagging, especially in the beginning, see screen shot below (Puls = pulse). You see that it takes some time for the watch to react and than it jumps from almost resting HR to zone 2. I think it also happens throughout the activity but it is not as easily to spot on the pulse curve. Anyone else experiencing this? It is not a major issue, but it makes me questioning the readings for the whole activity. I guess the real question is do I need to get me a HRM strap?

  • I guess the real question is do I need to get me a HRM strap?

    Yes.

  • Optical sensors used in watches, unlike HRM straps working with electrical signals, cope with a lot of signal noise, induced by the cadence, and by movements. Hence, they need to average the HR a bit more, and to analyze the incoming optical signal for a while, in order to be able to filter out the parasitic noise. What can help is doing some warm up with the watch in the activity or HR broadcasting mode, assuring good position and fit of the strap, but generally using a HRM strap is much easier and more accurate anyway. So if you care about the stats, and are serious about your training, then indeed using a HRM strap is unavoidable. Besides others, it can also deliver reliable HRV data (and hence the respiratory rate, training stress, stamina, and LT value, etc) during activities, which is very limited and rather inaccurate with any optical sensor.
