All day active calories are incorrect

I've observed that active calories are culculated thery strange, low from my point of view.

For example, I had  a run with 1000 calories spent, which garmin showed me after the run. However, if I go to the all day calories, I see only 600 Active calories per day.

Looks very strange, also in compiaring with my previous Fenix 5. Which was showing compatibaly calories spent in Activity and All day.

I checked my profile (wheight, age ...) and it is OK and the same as it was on Fenix 5. This looks like a bug.

Any comments?

Thanks

The 1000 Calories spent during the run are not only Active Calories. They are Total Calories (Resting+Active), because even during an activity you continue burning the energy with the RMR (Restig Metabolic Rate). The RMR is then not included in the total value of daily Active Calories. The Active Calories include, exactly as the name suggests, ony the active part pf the Calories burned during the day.

  • Thank you. Agree. I kept RMR in mind  as well. I have about 70 calories per hour. So having a 1.5 hour run with 1000 calories gives 1000-100=900. This is still too far from 600 Active daily calories from my point of view. And calculations are different from Fenix 5 for sure. Are you thinking that Instinct having a more sophisticated algorim than Fenix 5 ?

  • Please share a link to the concerned Activity, and post also a screesnhot of the Calories In/Out page for given day, so that we can have a look, and try to see where the problem is.

  • 3 PM nowMoring run 1.35 hours1036 calories spent during runCurrent Active calories 858

Pls see. During a day I also had some activity, like walking and skating, hence Active calories had been grown up to 858. But anyway looks a bit strange for 3 PM , having 1000K 1.5 hours run in the morning. Sorry for Russian )))

  • No problem with the Russian, I can read it Slight smile Yes, there is something that does not seem to add up correctly on those screens. It is possible that Instinct shows different values than expected on the Activity summary. That is one of the reasons I asked for a link to the Activity (open the Activity in Garmin Connect Web, make it visible to Everyone - see the padlock symbol at the top-right of the Activity screen, and then post the address of that page). And also the screenshot of the page Calories In/Out.

  • The screenshot of Garmin Connect shows the time 12:14, while the photo of your watch (that I assume you did a few minutes before the screenshot) shows 15:05. Please adjust the Upload Time Zones option in User Setting of GC Web, then sync the watch, and try making a new screenshot of the Calories page.

  • Just synced. The Time Zone is equal on both - MSK

  • Yes, you are right. It is still the same. The Active Calories burned during the Run Activity alone are 900 kcal ( 1036 total Activity Calories - 95 min * 1391 RMR /(60min * 16 hr + 16min) = 900.6 kcal ), so the total of 857 Active Calories for that day is definitely wrong. It must be significantly higher that 900 kcal (it should contain the Active Calories burned also out of the run).

I re-checked the activities and Calories on my Instinct for yesterday, and in my case everything fits well, and the numbers are exactly as one would expect, so I really do not know why it is wrong in your case. Did not you change some of the personal settings during the last hours? Or perhpas, if your watch was not restarted during the last days, since the latest firmware update, it could be the culprit too - an update may indeed introduce some unexpected behaviour in the calculation. So I'd suggest, stopping and restarting the watch, and then trying to do another activity to see, whether the Calories calculation then works as expected. If not, then contact the Customer Support, sending them clear and sufficient evidence - like the Activity link, and the Calories screenshot - that is sufficient to see the results are wrong.
