Unable to Upgrade to Version 7.08

I previously encountered an issue when upgrading my Instinct 3 Solar 50mm from version 6.28 to 6.29. Neither the Garmin Express on PC nor the OTA update via my phone could complete the upgrade successfully. I also tried solutions mentioned by other forum users, such as deleting unnecessary files and even performing a full reset, but the update still failed.

My watch's maximum available storage is only 14.6MB. Garmin support advised me to wait for the next version update. Today, I received an OTA prompt for version 7.08, and I eagerly attempted the update via both OTA on the watch and PC, but it still didn't work. I remain stuck on version 6.28.

A very small number of users seem to have the same issue. Official support has confirmed that this is a software problem, not a hardware issue. Could you please clarify when this will finally be fixed?

  • Only Connect IQ Store shows 20MB, i guess its restricted to use up only 20MB?

Yes, CIQ apps are restricted in memory usage.

  • I finally got in touch with customer service, and they told me that this issue might indeed occur. My watch has been sent for repair.

  • I was finally offered the new version via Garmin Express, which I have exclusively been using. However, I had only 13mb of free space and all files suggested to remove would not free up enough for the reported 17mb install of 7.08. Therefore attempts to install resulted in failure. Reluctantly, I paired the watch with a secondary backup phone I have with the Connect app. I was able to use that method to "send" the update to the watch, which subsequently allowed me to select it to install. The installation went smoothly and after rebooting did indeed report being the 7.08 version. Upon connecting it back up to my computer with Garmin Express and viewing the watch via windows explorer, I see the same as others report with around 40mb free of 83mb. I should hopefully be able to update subsequent versions via the Garmin Express windows application.

  • this was happening with 30MB free.  i deleted what was possible and got 33,5 MB free.   and now no more boot after restart message but it starts to install the update.

that is really tragedy  and BIG BIG SHAME for GARMIN company - total lost for their reputation.

We are not testing rabits but users who bought the product what should work .

  • I completely agree with you. Some devices have issues, but there are claims that they were fixed in version 7.08. In the end, these devices can only be repaired by technical support.

  • That’s a very good point. Usually I simply empty trash on Mac before disconnecting drive (if something was deleted), but actually you could use shortcut to delete files not putting them in trash (if you don’t like your trash to be emptied too often) -  Option + Command + delete

  • I am still unable to perform the update ot 7.08. Even when I deleted all files, activities etc, I3S, the watch stucks on "restarting". I had 12,8 MB of free space, now, after deleting files, 17,2 MB. No success at all.

  • if you did full reset, and you attempted to do update and it failed - I suggest you to reach out to you local warranty provider and claim for repair or replacement. Its not a very common issue I see around here.

  • 17,2MB is not enough. i was able to delete all data to release ca 33MB then is started to work. so delete all metrics data / tracks what is recommended in this thread. and it must work.

  • Hi, I am experiencing the exact same issue that you did (download update for 7.08 on watch, then watch is "restarting" for a long time, before finally rebooting and telling me that I am still on 6.29). I have tried at least 5 times now and always the same result.

It seems that you have since had success by clearing all your activity data. If I were to perform a similar process would this mean that I would lose my historic activity forever or would it still be retained in Garmin Connect? Would the activities return to the watch after a sync with Garmin Connect?
