Unable to Upgrade to Version 7.08

I previously encountered an issue when upgrading my Instinct 3 Solar 50mm from version 6.28 to 6.29. Neither the Garmin Express on PC nor the OTA update via my phone could complete the upgrade successfully. I also tried solutions mentioned by other forum users, such as deleting unnecessary files and even performing a full reset, but the update still failed.

My watch's maximum available storage is only 14.6MB. Garmin support advised me to wait for the next version update. Today, I received an OTA prompt for version 7.08, and I eagerly attempted the update via both OTA on the watch and PC, but it still didn't work. I remain stuck on version 6.28.

A very small number of users seem to have the same issue. Official support has confirmed that this is a software problem, not a hardware issue. Could you please clarify when this will finally be fixed?

  • Could you please clarify when this will finally be fixed?

It is already fixed in the version 7.08 Slight smile So you only have to manage to make sufficient free room for this update, and then you should have over 40 MB free. If deleting files from the following list, and removing all CIQ apps, does not help, try the master reset to factory defaults (with deleting data), then delete the /Debug folder again, and retry the update.

    • //GARMIN/Activity/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/RemoteSW/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/Debug/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/Courses/ - remove unneeded courses
    • //GARMIN/Workouts/ - remove unneeded workouts

You can also delete the two gmap... files in the root dir (backup them first). One of them may be write-protected, hence cannot be removed, so only one will be deleted, but I do not remember which one. They are both around 0.5 MB

  • Currently, it is not possible to free up space using the method you mentioned. Some devices still have this issue, so it has not been fully fixed:(

  • 40MB? I have 20 after update to 7.08

  • I have 42 MB after several days without cleaning

And 48.4 MB free after emptying /Activity and /Debug folders:

  • Oh wait. In file explorer it is 40-ish MBs. Only Connect IQ Store shows 20MB, i guess its restricted to use up only 20MB?

  • Some devices still have this issue, so it has not been fully fixed:(

As I wrote, it was fully fixed in v7.08.

Currently, it is not possible to free up space using the method you mentioned.

If you do not manage to free up sufficient room for the update to v7.08, even after the master reset to factory defaults with deleting all data, and subsequent redeleting of the Debug folder and the gmap.. files, then I suggest reaching out again to the Support.

  • ... also, if you happen to access the drive of the watch from a Mac computer, be aware that Macs have the bad habit to create hidden .trash folders even on USB drives. Those contain deleted files, and consume the free space too. Preferably use a Windows PC, and make sure to enable hidden folders in the View tab of File Explorer. You can then delete any .trash folders, if there are any

  • Thank you for your response! While all issues have been resolved in v7.08, the problem of not being able to free up enough space still exists in v6.28. It might not have occurred on your device, but I have received confirmation from the official support that they have successfully reproduced the issue and are working on a fix.

  • yes, I am performing the operation on Windows and have enabled the option to show hidden folders.

  • I have been trying to perform the update for 2 last days.  (  did it like 10times )

i had to ask for manual update check in my watches as no automatic update performed.

always after 2-3 requests  for update check  . the update is going to start to be downloaded.

I see in my watch update v7.08 available for instalation  , so i click on it do perform instalation .

Then my watch just writes  " Restarting " ( for ca 2 minutes ) ,  restart is completed and message after boot it   firmware 6.29 is installed properly.

WTF ...   in system info i still see that my firmware is 6.29 .
